Sakamichi no Apollon ( Japanese 坂 道 の ア ポ ロ ン , Sakamichi no Aporon , Eng . "The Apollon from the Hang") is a manga series drawn by Kodama Yuki and was published in the Shojo manga magazine Flowers of the Shogakukan publishing house . It was adapted as an anime television series in 2012 , the English title of which is Kids on the Slope .

action

Due to his father's work situation, Kaoru Nishimi ( 西 見 薫 ) had to move from Yokosuka to Sasebo in Kyushu in the summer of 1966 to live with his paternal aunt. There he met the energetic Sentarō Kawabuchi ( 川 渕 千 太郎 ) and his sandpit friend Ritsuko Mukae ( 迎 律 子 ). When Sentarō learns that Kaoru can play the piano , he urges the rather withdrawn Kaoru to play jazz with him in the basement of Ritsuko's father's record shop . Kaoru didn’t like this idea very much at the beginning, because up until this point he saw school education as part of his life and regarded jazz as barbaric. However, over time Kaoru can win more and more from jazz and befriends, among others, Sentarō and falls in love with Ritsuko. However, she rejects him because she is in love with Sentaro.

Anime

In 2012 the manga was filmed by MAPPA and Tezuka Productions and directed by Shin'ichirō Watanabe as an anime television series.

The first broadcast of the total of 12 episodes took place from April 13th to June 29th, 2012 shortly after midnight (and thus on the previous television day ) in the aminoA program block on Fuji TV . With up to a week offset followed by other stations of Fuji Network Systems (FNS) as Tōkai TV , Saga TV , TV Nishi-Nippon , Sakuranbo TV , Akita TV , Kagoshima TV , TV Kumamoto , Fukushima TV , TV Shin-Hiroshima , TV Ehime , Niigata Sōgō TV , Sendai Hōsō , Kansai TV , Iwate Menkoi TV , TV Shizuoka and TV Nagasaki , as well as from April 29th nationwide by satellite on BS Fuji and from August 20, 2012 on Hokkaidō Bunka Hōsō .

At the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival, the series was named "particularly worth seeing" by the jury.

The song Playball was sung and texted by YUKI as the opening credits, and Altair was sung and written by Motohiro Hata as the credits . Like the soundtrack , the music comes from Yōko Kanno , who already worked with director Watanabe on an earlier jazz-heavy series, Cowboy Bebop .

reception

The manga won the 2011 Shogakukan Manga Prize. The German magazine AnimaniA calls the anime a "high quality animated story about friendship, music and first love". Particular importance was attached to the authentic soundtrack, which, together with the “unplugged sounding” opening and closing songs, went well with the story in the 1960s. Although the plot only offers “everyday drama”, it “quickly and deeply casts a spell” on the viewer.
