action

After the death of their father Kazuo, Momo Miyaura and her mother Ikuko travel from Tokyo to the Seto Inland Sea . Momo carries with her her father's unfinished letter, which only contains the words Momo e (To Momo). The two arrive at their farm in Shiojima ( 汐 島 ) and meet their old relatives Sachio and Sae Sadahama, as well as Koichi, a postman and old friend of Ikuko, who was in love with him at the time. Momo is devastated and misses Tokyo. In the attic she opens a rare picture book about goblins and yōkai , collected by Sachio's father. Then 3 drops fall from the sky on Ikuko's property and transform into the Yōkai Kawa, Mame and Iwa, the leader. While Ikuko is in nursing school, Momo reads books and begins to hear strange noises in the house. She is chased out of the house by the Yōkai and meets the boy Yota. Unsuspecting because they cannot hear the noises, Ikuko and Yota enter the house. The next morning Momo meets Yota and gets to know his sister Umi. The three meet up with friends and go swimming near a bridge, but Momo doesn't dare to jump off the bridge into the water and runs to a shelter during a thunderstorm. Iwa, Mame and Kawa then reveal that they have stolen fruit from all over the island. Momo runs back to the courtyard in fear and discovers that the garden has been ransacked. Then Sachio tells Momo that the yōkai used to be gods but were transformed as punishment for breaking the divine laws. Momo later tries to prevent the yōkai from stealing, and Kawa breaks Ikuko's mirror. Thereupon an argument breaks out between Momo and Ikuko and Momo runs away. While Ikuko is looking for Momo, she has a severe asthma attack. While Momo overhears her mother's asthma attack, she notices her mistake and asks the yōkai if they can help her find a doctor on the island. The yōkai refuse and Momo goes looking alone. Koichi and Yota go after her, then she tells about the argument with Kazuo before his death and asks Koichi for help in finding a doctor. Meanwhile, the yōkai realize that it is possible for them to escape punishment, and they help Momo and Koichi to cross the new and not yet opened bridge where the two find a doctor. The next morning Momo writes a letter to her father and thanks him while Ikuko recovers. The yōkai have fulfilled their mission to protect Momo and turn back into drops of water and disappear into the sky. That night, during tōrō nagashi , the two recover and realize that Kazuo probably wanted to write that he was proud of Momo. She later starts her new life with Yota by jumping off the bridge with him.
