The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya ( Jap. 涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 , Haruhi Suzumiya ) is an anime - television series , the first time in 2006 in Japan was shown and on the Light-Novel series Suzumiya Haruhi based.

In the series directed by Tatsuya Ishihara , volumes 1–3 and 5–6 were adapted. The screenplay for the original ninth episode, Someday in the Rain , was written exclusively for the anime by Nagaru Tanigawa , the author of the series. The 4th volume of the novel series was released in 2010 as a movie Suzumiya Haruhi no Shōshitsu . The animations for the series and the movie come from the anime studio Kyōto Animation .

The anime is about Haruhi Suzumiya, a schoolgirl with the godlike ability to freely shape the world and reality according to her wishes. She poses a danger to the universe because she is unaware of this ability and quickly becomes bored and frustrated. Her close school friends, who with the exception of the narrator Kyon, have been assigned by various organizations, are supposed to keep them under surveillance and under control.

Shortly after the series aired from April 3, 2006 to July 3, 2006 in Japan, Kadokawa Shoten (the editor of the book series) received numerous offers to license the plot as an anime, manga and light novel . Building on the already successful book series, the anime was the trigger for a large fan movement, whose fans call themselves Haruhiists . As a result of an internet phenomenon, the franchise around the series became one of the most famous anime productions of all. In Germany, the anime was licensed by Anime Virtual . Since June 9, 2008, the dubbed version of the series has appeared on four DVDs, which were released about two months apart. From spring 2012, the second season and the movie will also be released in Germany on the anime label Kazé .

action

The anime was shown in a non-chronological order when it premiered on Japanese television. Nevertheless, the sections of the action are to be reproduced in chronological order below.

The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

introduction

The first six episodes roughly reflect the events of the first light novel Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu and the first half of Suzumiya Haruhi no Tameiki and begin with a scene in which Kyon, who has just started school, is accompanied on his way to school. In a monologue that releases his inner thoughts, he describes his own personality as a grown-up boy who has not believed in things like Santa Claus , supernatural abilities , aliens or time travelers for a long time . When introducing himself to the newly formed class, he is shocked by the attractive classmate Haruhi Suzumiya, who - contrary to his previously described opinion - declares that she can only get enthusiastic about such fantasy figures and is not interested in normal people. Sitting right in front of her, he nevertheless manages to establish a relationship with Haruhi, who has been declared crazy by his classmates, based on occasional conversations.

After Haruhi tried out all the club activities after a few weeks and was not enthusiastic about any of the school clubs, Kyon inadvertently inspires her to take the initiative herself. She now wants to found a school club according to her ideas and is making the first arrangements. She persuades the rather disinterested Kyon to cooperate, which automatically becomes the second club member.

While searching for a club room, Haruhi comes across the remains of the literary club, which consists of only one member: the quiet and bibliophile Yuki Nagato, who does not oppose Haruhi taking over the room and thus becomes the third club member. The following day, Haruhi dragged Mikuru Asahina into the club room, an unsuspecting and shy student who is known as "Loli de Kyonyū" (German: "Lolita [ie very young looking girl] with huge breasts") because of her strong effects on males. Haruhi urges Mikuru with various ulterior motives to join the as yet nameless club. After some hesitation, Mikuru agrees when she seems to have recognized Yuki. This behavior is later based on the relationship between the club members and Haruhi, who all join this club by no coincidence.

At this point in time, Kyon is not yet aware that the new club members are agents of various secret organizations and must first watch how Haruhi abuses the shy Mikuru for advertising purposes and as a means of pressure. For example, she visits the computer club and blackmailed the chairman with photos that show an alleged rape of Mikuru.

Some time later, Itsuki Koizumi, the second male and last member of the club, appears who apparently wants to join the club of his own free will. With the inclusion of the last member of the club, which now Haruhi fulfilled SOS Brigade jap (. SOS団 , SOS-dan , short for Sekai o Ōi ni moriageru tame no Suzumiya Haruhi no dan , 世界を大いに盛り上げるための涼宮ハルヒの 団 , dt. Suzumiya Haruhi's group to improve the mood in the world considerably), also the requirements of the school that a school club needs at least five members.

Identity of the club members

While Haruhi comes up with one club activity after the other and harasses the members, Kyon learns more and more of the special circumstances of the other club members in individual conversations. These tell him about their true nature very early on. However, Kyon is not able to classify the utterances properly because he is not completely convinced of them. In a private conversation, Yuki tells him about her existence as a "human interface" ( an alien ) and her job of observing Haruhi for the Integrated Data Entity . She has to prove this for the first time when Ryōko, the most popular and busiest student in the class and also a "human interface", gets out of control and tries to kill Kyon. There is a duel between the two aliens, which Yuki wins. Despite severe wounds, Yuki succeeds in reconstructing himself and the section of the school building, which was completely destroyed in the course of the fight, and pretends that Ryōko has moved to another city.

Meanwhile, Mikuru reported to him that he was a time traveler who was stuck in the now. Also entrusted with the mission to find out more about Haruhi, she goes through countless embarrassing hardships. She proves her existence to Kyon through her older self , whom he runs into at school. She is also the cause of several paradoxes, since she influences her own future through her time travel into the past and therefore always tries not to encounter her younger self.

Itsuki identifies himself as a member of an organization of ESP-gifted people and is supposed to keep Haruhi emotionally under control. Itsuki describes Kyon almost depressingly as an ordinary person and at the same time as an unusual factor close to Haruhi. Since Haruhi notices the disappearance of Ryoko and begins to investigate which leads to contradictions, she takes Kyon as a companion to visit the apartment of the missing Ryoko. Ultimately, however, they have to stop the investigation without having achieved anything, which accordingly frustrates Haruhi. Kyon is then picked up by Itsuki, who during a trip to another part of the city tells him in detail about his activities to fight the Shinjin ( 神 人 , "divine person") that appear in the parallel universe created by Haruhi . Which he immediately demonstrates to him.

Open end

The sixth episode returns to a more normal school day. Haruhi shows the first signs that she is not treating Kyon like any other student and a touch of envy when she sees Kyon together with Mikuru. The hustle and bustle is interrupted by an unreal situation in which Kyon remains alone at school with Haruhi, while the entire school is surrounded by a parallel universe of Haruhi. In it, Haruhi is so impressed and full of joy by the Shinjin that everything around them suddenly dissolves and Kyon wakes up in his bed the next day, although it remains unclear to him whether it was just a dream. From the reactions of the other club members, however, it is clear that he really was with Haruhi in the parallel world. Since this episode also marks the end of the television series, it ends with a continuation of normal school life. There is a meeting between Haruhi and Kyon, which suggests a romance, but ends openly.

The boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya

The individual episode comes from a later chapter of the second light novel Suzumiya Haruhi no Tameiki, which takes place according to the plot described above. The focus of the episode is Haruhi's idea of taking part in a baseball competition. In addition, there are a few more characters, including Kyon's two friends, his little sister and Tsuruya. Hopelessly inferior to the other team and disappointed by the incompetence of her team, Haruhi falls into a deeper depression that the other club members can feel. Yuki, who had spoken out against any manipulation of the game, is now forced to use her skills, which turns the course of the game upside down. Leaving the pitch as a narrow winner with a happy Haruhi, the club is confronted with several other competitions the next day, in which Haruhi also wants to take part.

Mysterique Sign

Building on the eponymous chapter of the third light novel Suzumiya Haruhi no Taikutsu , the episode shows Kyon already familiar with the phenomena that occur in the presence of Haruhi, and he begins to question their origins. Emiri Kimidori ( 喜 緑 江 美 里 , Kimidori Emiri ), the alleged friend of the computer club chairman, asks Haruhi for help, as her boyfriend has disappeared without a trace for a few days. Haruhi, excited about this, offers to do the research. In the chairman's room, to which Yuki provided access, Haruhi can not see anything unusual and soon leaves the house, bored. Meanwhile, the other four remaining members meet again in the room, as Yuki and Itsuki claim to have sensed the presence of a parallel dimension that resembles the parallel universes of Haruhi. Brought to the parallel world by Yuki, there is a confrontation with a being billions of years old who had taken in the chairman. Defeated by Yuki without any problems and able to save the chairman, all five return to everyday life. In conclusion, it turns out that Haruhi is said to have awakened the creature with the design of the logo of her website, since it was the next step in evolution after the computers were networked. Kyon still wonders whether everything that happens around him was created by Haruhi.

The lonely island syndrome

In this two-episode story, a “distant relative” of Itsuki invites the SOS Brigade, along with Kyon's little sister, to a stay in his newly built villa on a desert island. On their first day, the members enjoy their stay, but are soon caught by a storm and have to stay inside the building. The members spend their time playing when the owner of the villa disappears without a trace and is ultimately found dead in his room. While searching for clues about the killer, Yutaka, the owner's younger brother, is suspected of having left the island shortly before the storm lifted. This leads Haruhi and Kyon to search the island for clues and ultimately end up in an accident in a cave that they can no longer leave alone. While both are trying to dry their things, Haruhi gets behind the riddle with the help of Kyon and, after she is rescued, also stages a play. In this case, the "dead" owner is so shocked that he ultimately wants to defend himself. It turns out that it was all just a staging to keep Haruhi busy in the bad weather. However, some questions remain unanswered as not all of the observed activities were planned in the house.

Live Alive

The 12th episode of the series is taken from the first chapter of the 6th light novel Suzumiya Haruhi no Dōyō and accompanies Kyon at a school festival, where the club members are individually out and about and participate in various attractions, while her self-made film - the one in episode 11 "The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina" can be seen - is performed. Itsuki uses the time to put on plays, Mikuru works as a maid in a café and Yuki tries his hand at fortune telling, which leads to predictions accurate to the second. Towards the end of the day, Kyon retires from school to the gym to listen to the school bands and relax a little. Bored by the bands that started playing, he is half asleep and is amazed to see how quickly the hall fills up just before the school band ENOZ is announced. He is horrified to find that Haruhi and Yuki have taken over the function of two band members because they were canceled at short notice. Despite Kyon's initial concerns, the performance was a complete success. At the end of the episode, Kyon meets Haruhi, who is almost bored again, and involuntarily gives her the idea of starting her own band.

Characters

→ See main article: Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu

At the center of the light novel are the members of the SOS brigade, almost all of whom fulfill the clichés for Moe characters. There is the male protagonist Kyon , from whose point of view the story is told. At the center of the plot is the bright, eccentric and unpredictable student Haruhi Suzumiya , from whom all special events proceed. Another club member is the alien Yuki Nagato , who is extremely taciturn and indifferent at the beginning. Most of the time with her nose in a book, she watches Haruhi's actions. The shy and clumsy Mikuru Asahina is also supposed to find out more about Haruhi as a time traveler from the future. In contrast to Yuki, as "Loli de Kyonyū" (Eng. "Lolita [ie very young looking girl] with huge breasts") she is repeatedly the victim of Haruhi's absurd ideas. The last member of the clubs is the ESP talent Itsuki Koizumi , who is supposed to control and research Haruhi on behalf of the Agency. Together with the other members of the organization, he keeps going out to fight the monsters created by Haruhi in a parallel world.

In addition to them, the supporting characters Ryōko Asakura, Tsuruya and the younger sister of Kyon achieved widespread fame, as they were also repeatedly used for covers and covers of magazines. Many of the characters were parodies of which the parodies of Haruhi and Tsuruya are among the best known, which are also implemented in the form of a short film series.

ENOZ

ENOZ is a fictional band made up of four schoolgirls and only appears during the twelfth episode within the anime series. The name is derived from the real J-Pop band ZONE , which was written backwards. The characters were modeled on the band members, which is expressed, among other things, in only slightly different first names compared to the real group. For this purpose, some Kanji were exchanged or additional syllables were added. In the original novel there is also a school band, but their name is never mentioned and only has three members.

In the anime, during the school festival, band members Miyuki and Takako do not appear due to illness and are replaced by Haruhi and Yuki. In this new formation they play the titles "God knows ..." and "Lost my music" in the television series. Both songs were in a longer version on the single Suzumiya Haruhi no Tsumeawase published which the best-selling and located the longest on the charts Seiyū - Single is Japan.

Concept and scenery

The drawings of the station, referred to as Kitaguchi in the series , are based on photographs of the real station Nishinomiya-Kitaguchi

As in the introduction to the first light novel, Kyon's narrator accompanies the audience through the plot with his monologues that are repeatedly interspersed. To this end, he comments, sometimes with sarcastic comments, on the visually presented events, the dialogue of which repeatedly fades into the background. As a first-person narrator who almost exclusively uses an internal monologue , he also includes future events so that the entire plot is viewed in retrospect. This enables the viewer to present numerous ironic trains of thought and to maintain a certain distance from the main character Haruhi Suzumiya. The same narrator could also be used to quickly switch between the scenes of the plot without the need for a longer visual introduction.

As with other series from Kyōto Animation , many scenes and locations are based on a real model, the individual components of which were put together to form a coherent scenery. This time the city of Nishinomiya in Hyōgo Prefecture , where the Kwansei Gakuin University , which Nagaru Tanigawa once attended, is located, served as a template . As with the other series, the real name of the city and the locations is not mentioned. However, numerous hints were interspersed that suggest the real locations. The names of the stopping stations or the baseball teams were given in a different form, but these are easy to recognize or, in particular, are very similar to the original. For example, the trains of the Hankyū Dentetsu stop at the fictional Kitaguchi station , which is similar to the real Nishinomiya-Kitaguchi station. At the station Kōyōen ( 光 陽 園 駅 , Kōyōen-eki ) compared to the real station Kōyōen ( 甲 陽 園 駅 , Kōyōen-eki ) even only the Kanji were exchanged so that the pronunciation remained the same despite the different spelling. The high school to the north in Nishinomiya, attended by Kyon, Haruhi, and the other members of the club, is also a real setting. This procedure also continues with other real things mentioned by name. The faithful backgrounds also come from the vicinity of the place.

Involved

Based on the Light Novel template Haruhi Suzumiya from Nagaru Tanigawa did the anime - television series under the direction of Tatsuya Ishihara in the studio Kyoto Animation . The appearance of the characters was largely taken from the book illustrations by Noizi Ito , which were revised again by Shoko Ikeda . The artistic direction took Seiki Tamura with the support of Miyuki Hiratoko.

The accompanying music was both composed and arranged by Satoru Kōsaki . Yota Tsuruoka and Yoshimi Sugiyama from Rakuonsha were responsible for the setting, and they also worked on many titles that were created outside of Kyoto Animation. Eiko Morikawa from Sound Garden created the associated sound effects .

synchronization

In the Japanese version, Aya Hirano played the role of Haruhi Suzumiya . Before she was approached by the producers, she had already read the books in the light novel series. In an interview, she admitted that it was difficult for her to put herself in the role of Haruhi because Haruhi's character was so powerful and terrifying. So she played Haruhi's role a little differently than described in the original and added cute-looking elements to the personality of her character. Despite her own doubts, she was able to win the 2007 Seiyū Awards in the category Best Newcomer (female) with this role and received the award for best voice actress at the Tōkyō Kokusai Anime Fair . Her role as Haruhi Suzumiya was the springboard of her career.

Minori Chihara also initially had problems identifying with her role as Yuki Nagato . So far she had mainly played very energetic characters and now had to play a character with Yuki who is taciturn and at the same time "cool".

Contrary to her seiyū colleagues, Yūko Gotō played a typical Moe character with Mikuru Asahina and was even given instructions by the director to play her "usual role". This is said to have made speaking Mikuru easy for her and so she tried to portray Mikuru as a rather incompetent person, but with a clear objective and a little intelligence.

The German version was dubbed by Elektrofilm. In the forum of the licensee Anime Virtual , fans were given the opportunity to vote on speaker suggestions in advance. The selection was limited to the speakers available at Electrofilm.

Music publications

→ Main article: List of music releases from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu

Based on the music of the anime, numerous music productions appeared, almost all of which were able to place themselves in the Japanese charts and set new sales records for singles by seiyūs . All four published soundtrack singles were in the top 10 of the Japanese singles charts, of which Suzumiya Haruhi no Tsumeawase and Hare Hare Yukai stayed in the Japanese singles charts for about 2 years.

Nine character singles were released, each with one of the characters as a cover and interpreted by the seiyū of the associated character. Each of these CDs contained the title Hare Hare Yukai in a version that was adapted to the characteristics of the corresponding figure. All nine of the CDs released over a period of about half a year made it into the top 20 of the singles charts. With a 9th place, the recently released single for Kyon achieved the best ranking in the CD series.

Shortly after the release of the single Super Driver , it was announced that a total of more than a million CDs had been sold that built on the franchise. Super Driver was the first single release for the opening credits of the second season.

Live concerts

On March 18, 2007, the live concert Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekisō ( 涼 宮 ハ ル ヒ の 激 奏 ) took place in the Sonic City of Ōmiya , Saitama . The seiyū from the anime sang pieces of music from the series and offered a program designed primarily for fun. A DVD double pack of the concert was released on July 27, 2007 by Kadokawa Entertainment and Movic . However, the picture quality, especially that of the second DVD, was often criticized.

At Animelo Summer Live 2007 Generation-A , the biggest annual anime music concert at Nippon Budōkan , Aya Hirano performed as a special guest with the title Bōken Desho Desho? in a rocking version.

Publications

The first series version was broadcast for the first time from April 3 to July 3, 2006 at midnight (and thus on the previous television day ) on the channel Chiba TV . One hour later, TV Saitama followed and within a week TV Kanagawa , KBS Kyōto , TV Hokkaido , Sun TV , Tōhoku Hōsō , Tokyo MX , TV Aichi , Hiroshima Home TV and TVQ Kyushu . Shortly after the end of the first broadcast, a first DVD of the series was offered on June 23, 2006 . This only contained the first episode, Asahina Mikuru no Bōken Episode 00 . It was followed by seven other DVD releases under the title Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu 1 to Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu 7 with, as usual for anime, two more episodes each, which appeared in full by January 26, 2007. The license holder and provider of the series was in both cases Kadokawa Entertainment . These were published in a regular and a limited version.

In 2009 a new season of episodes appeared. If the episodes from 2006 were not broadcast chronologically, this was done in 2009 in a chronological order, so that the old episodes from 2006 and the new episodes from 2009 were broadcast more or less alternately. This version first aired from April 3 to October 9, 2009 after midnight on Sun TV. TV Saitama and Niigata TV 21 followed on the same night , and within two weeks Tokyo MX, TV Kanagawa, TVQ Kyushu, TV Wakayama , TV Hokkaido, KBS Kyōto, Hiroshima TV , Chiba TV, Nara TV , Sendai Hōsō and Nagoya TV . The baton of the series remained essentially the same, but the direction was now carried out by Yasuhiro Takemoto , who Tatsuya Ishihara was the overall director. Nominally, however, the character Haruhi Suzumiya was again led as the main responsible, but this time with her series title Brigade Chief ( 団 長 , danchō ). Tatsuya Ishiharas was thereby as deputy brigade chief ( 団 長 代理 , danchō dairi ) and Yasuhiro Takemoto as assistant brigade chief ( 団 長 補 佐 , danchō hosa ).

The first DVD of the 2009 version was released on August 28, 2009 under the title Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu 4: Sasa-no-Ha Rhapsody with only named episode. In Germany, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu was licensed by Anime Virtual and released on four DVDs in 2008. The title The Longing of Haruhi Suzumiya was originally planned and also announced. The order of the episodes corresponds to the Japanese DVD release, which is chronological, but is preceded by the episode “The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina”. According to the plot, this would be the eleventh episode. On August 27, 2010, it was published again as a premium box set.

Second season

A continuation of the series was announced with a full-page advertisement in the July 7, 2007 issue of the Asahi Shimbun . According to one estimate, this advertisement is said to have cost about 40 million yen. Despite this high output and some hints that were interspersed later on the website, there was no concrete information about the continuation.

After many small rumors and interspersed references to the website of Kadokawa Shoten, which should suggest an implementation of the fourth light novel Suzumiya Haruhi no Shōshitsu , numerous news sites reported the announcement of the second season for April 2009 on February 3, 2009. They supported referring to the television commercial for the March issue of Newtype magazine , which was announced for February 10, 2009. The advertisement featured Yuki Nagato on the front page of the magazine, which previously also played a larger role in the clues. Just one day later, however , J-Cast reported a repetition of the first season and relied on a spokesperson for Kadokawa Shoten, so that until the magazine was published it was unclear whether a sequel was really being reported. After the March issue was released, it turned out that the magazine was actually just doing a rerun of the first season, releasing the short films of the manga parodies on YouTube and animating K-On! announced by Kyōto Animation .

After it was determined that it was only a repeat of the first season, the rumor surfaced again that the second season would be shown after the repeat. A 28-episode series had been registered with the broadcasters, but the first season was only 14 episodes long. Both J-Cast and Gigazine saw it as a reference to the second season. However, there was no specific date or final confirmation for a second season and the reports about whether there will be a sequel or not - changed from week to week.

On early Friday morning May 22, 2009 Japanese time, the long-running rumors were confirmed. The eighth episode of the re-airing of the first season was replaced unannounced by the first episode of the second season, Sasa no Ha Rhapsody , and was seen on Sun Television . As a result, there were massive reactions on the world's largest Internet forum 2ch with several hundred postings per minute.

But also in the further course there was again and again a conscious lack of clarity about when and how many new episodes and sections would be shown. The program plans changed frequently, as the section Endless Eight in particular took up significantly more time and consequences than was predicted and received harsh criticism for it (see criticism of Endless Eight ).

On October 9, 2009, at the end of the 28th episode Someday in the Rain, it was announced that a film about the fourth novel, Suzumiya Haruhi no Shōshitsu , will be released in Japanese cinemas in the spring of 2010 .

An English version of the second season is to be released on September 14, 2010 by Funimation on 4 DVDs. This also contains a CD with the opening title Super Driver and the closing title Tomare! .

In Germany, the second season will be released on DVD at the same time as the movie from spring 2012 on the anime label Kazé .

Order of the episodes

The anime was shown on television when it first aired in 2006 in a non-chronological order, which begins with a prologue followed by the six chapters of the first light novel Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu . Individual episodes based on the events of the subsequent editions of the novel were inserted between these six chronological episodes. In the preview of the next episode, Haruhi and Kyon each presented a number. The number announced by Haruhi always referred to how the episode should be classified in the chronology , while Kyon presented the number according to the order in which it was broadcast and Haruhi corrected it accordingly. Only in the twelfth episode broadcast both numbers matched, which nevertheless caused Kyon to contradict Haruhi as usual, only to have to correct himself a few seconds later. According to the characters, these two sequences are also known as the "Haruhi or Kyon sequence".

In 2009 the series was broadcast again. However, it was expanded to include episodes of a new season, which also includes 14 episodes and was previously deliberately concealed by Kadokawa Shoten . The second broadcast was in chronological order, which meant that the new episodes were among the existing ones.

The following list shows the consequences in chronological order according to the action. Newly added episodes in the season or the repetition are highlighted in green. In addition, the light novel volume (vol.) On which the respective episode is based is given.

reception

Just a few days after the first episodes were broadcast, the first videos produced by fans were found on larger video portals . Fans in disguise danced the choreography of the credits or AMVs were cut from individual scenes. Contrary to the general view of copyright law, the license owner Kadokawa Shoten did not take action, but used the widespread distribution of fan videos on portals such as YouTube for a long-term experiment worth millions. At the Creative Commons conference in Sapporo , managing director Tsuguhiko Kadokawa announced that it was precisely this “negligent” handling of copyright that made the series a great success. Even in remote parts of the world, the series achieved a high level of awareness on the Internet even before the anime was offered in a localized version. Despite little advertising, this was reflected in high sales figures. According to his own statements, Kadokawa came out to meet the fans and tried to persuade the authors of foreign components to approve the videos, some of which were viewed millions of times. However, this did not always succeed and was sometimes seen as strange by the adjusters, because they felt they were being watched.

In line with this development, Newtype magazine named Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu the most popular anime of 2006. This was partially confirmed in a survey by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2007. 80,402 Japanese were named for the most famous anime and manga titles of all time. They were presented with a list of 50 selected anime and manga from which they were asked to choose the most popular ones, but they could also make their own suggestions. In the survey, the series came in 22nd, although it was not on the list, but had to be supplemented by the participants themselves. Of all the works that were added by hand, the series was the best known.

Causes of Success and Haruhiism

“Without question, the phenomenon of Haruhiism will be here to stay and make it's impact among the otaku fanbase. I have personally never seen such success being achieved by a show, just 3 episodes in it's initial run. "

“Without question, the Haruhi phenomenon will persist and make an impact on the otaku fan base. I myself have never experienced such a success of a show and after only three episodes broadcast for the first time. "

- Kurogane

After the anime was released, a fan scene was created that is said to have shot up like "mushrooms after a rain shower". At first almost unknown, the title of the series and the first name of Haruhi Suzumiya quickly developed into a catchphrase. Just as the fans of Star Trek as Trekkies call, call themselves fans of the franchise "Haruhiisten" and call their fan base similar to a religion or form of government as "Haruhiismus" ( ハルヒ主義 , Haruhi shugi , Eng. Haruhiism ). At the center of this cult is the character Haruhi Suzumiya, who should not be taken very seriously, as in the anime is worshiped and feared as a goddess.

The reasons for the widespread popularity of the fan scene are seen in the charisma of the main character and the unusual setting. The latter manages to leave a “fresh” impression that deviates from everyday life, despite the seemingly realistic world, with surrealistic additions. So Haruhi is the personification of the "inner child" that rests in every human being, that still clings to things like UFOs and time travelers and ignores the harsh reality. The relentless behavior of the main character certainly also contributed to the fact that at least the series was discussed.

Further causes of the success are seen in the animation by Kyōto Animation . The studio had already dealt with titles like Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu , full metal panic! The Second Raid and Air gained a good reputation and was able to win more viewers for the series in advance. The audience then came as a shock with the first episode . The eleventh episode, from a chronological point of view, The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina was broadcast, which was based on an amateur video. Shocked by the quality of a “branded studio”, rumors quickly spread about the series and aroused great interest in the previously little-advertised animation. In the second episode, those interested were not disappointed and the quality was appealing.

At the same time, the anime provided the "perfect" source material for fan productions of all kinds. The unusual end credits, which showed a choreography by the SOS Brigade members for the title Hare Hare Yukai , quickly struck in the minds of the audience itself a cultural phenomenon. This paid off in particular for the license owner Kadokawa Shoten , who, according to his own statement , receives over 10 million yen (about 86,000 euros) a month for advertising income from Google's YouTube alone . Although Kadokawa has opened his own channel on YouTube and uploaded his own videos, most of the income comes from the MAD videos, which were viewed over 50 million times between September and November 2008 .

Sales figures

The first two DVDs had sold 70,000 and 90,000 copies in Japan by August 2006. This surprised Kadokawa very much. According to initial estimates by sales director Takafumi Ishibashi, the number of DVDs sold in the entire series should exceed the 500,000 mark. When the PlayStation Portable game Suzumiya Haruhi no Yakusoku was announced on September 27, 2007, the promotional video contained information on 800,000 DVDs sold, 4 million visual novels sold and one million manga editions sold. Comparable data from Oricon only came to around 330,000 DVDs at this point in time. In relation to the mass of animes, this is still a very good result, as most of them sell less than 10,000 copies per DVD. Various causes were named for this serious difference. Oricon does not record all dealers and thus has relatively comparable but not absolute figures. At the same time, the editor was accused of exaggeration, which was not the first time. The real Japanese sales are therefore somewhere between these two figures.

Awards

The series won the 2006 Animation Kobe Award for Best TV Series . At the sixth Tokyo Anime Awards , the anime won the Best Anime TV Series award along with Code Geass and Death Note .

Criticism of Endless Eight

Endless Eight was an eight-episode plot section of the second season that was particularly criticized because the eight episodes offered almost identical, repetitive content. Each of these episodes told the same story with only minimal variations and always the same outcome, which led to an endless loop . So Yutaka Yamamoto (also known as Yamakan), a former employee of the first season, who also took on the role of director for some episodes, took the opportunity to apologize on the Otakon for the fact that this had come to this. According to him, this section had already been discussed a year earlier and that he would have wanted to expand it to a maximum of 2 episodes. He described Endless Eight as "inexcusable". However, according to his statement , Yamakan was dismissed quite dishonorably during the production of Lucky Star and then criticized his former employer more often, such as in Kannagi . This criticism was later joined by spokeswoman Aya Hirano , who described the section in her own radio show as "even more terrible for the viewer than for the speakers" and apologized to her fans. At first you thought the script was a bad joke.

I knew about the book and read it beforehand. "Has there ever been a main character this outgoing and powerful?" That's the kind of strong impression I got from the Haruhi character. When they asked me to play her character, my reaction was "wow, i get to play her?" At that point, I couldn't imagine myself as her. In a way, so it didn't become too scary, I thought of playing her character as someone who is fun to be around, someone who sets the tone for other people. The cute parts of her personality were added for the anime. "

I was shocked too - I couldn't picture myself as Nagato Yuki. Until now, I've player lots of energetic female characters. Someone like Yuki, who's taciturn and… well, an alien… Someone who acts cool, who has a calm composure - I've never played a character like that before. So, for me, playing Yuki's character was a pretty tough hurdle to clear. There were many things i had to learn in the process. "

I've played lots of cute, "moe" characters like Mikuru. Even when i was cast for the part, the director said "Ms. Gotō, please play the part like you always do. “In that respect, there weren't any huge problems. Generally, rather than playing a typical cute character, she's a person from the future with a mission - Even though she isn't that capable, she always tries hard. So i tried to play her character with a little intelligence and determination. "
