Newtype ( Japanese 月刊 ニ ュ ー タ イ プ Gekkan nyūtaipu , German  "monthly Newtype" ) is a Japanese magazine published by Kadokawa Shoten , which appears monthly. It contains individual chapters of manga series as well as articles on anime and manga, to a lesser extent also science fiction and computer games . It has been published since March 8, 1985 with the first edition for April 1985. A Korean edition appears in South Korea , and the English offshoot Newtype USA also appeared in the United States from 2002–2008 at times . The last Newtype USA ends with the February 2008 edition.

Origin of name

The name of the magazine Newtype originally comes from the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) and its sequel Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985) from the timeline Universal Century (UC) in the Gundam universe , in which a new breed of people with changed genes and supernatural abilities grow up - the " Newtype ", whose habitat and birthplace is space. In science fiction history, planet earth is the home planet for the " Newtypes " and the birthplace of their parents and ancestors whom they have not yet met.

Beginning in July 1999, Daewon CI in South Korea published a Korean edition of the magazine containing translated articles from the Japanese Newtype as well as articles on the Korean market and own series. With the February 2014 issue, Newtype Korea was discontinued. From November 2002 to February 2008 an English edition of the magazine was published in the USA by AD Vision together with ADV Films and ADV Manga .
