Mobile Suit Gundam ( Japanese 機動 戦 士 ガ ン ダ ム , Kidō Senshi Gandamu , also known as Mobile Solder Gundam , First Gundam , Gundam 0079 ) is a 43-part Japanese anime series from 1979 by Yoshiyuki Tomino , produced by Sunrise and the first part of the Gundam universe. Directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino. It first aired in Japan on Nagoya Broadcasting Network on April 7, 1979 and ended on January 26, 1980. It was the very first Gundam series to be continued in several sequels and spin-offs. She was the first winner of the Animage (Anime Grand Prix) in 1979.
The series was later re-cut into three films for the cinema. The characters were developed by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, with Kunio Okawara responsible for the mecha design. He also invented the RX-78-2 Gundam. For the 30th anniversary of the series, a full-size RX-78-2 figure was set up in Shizuoka Prefecture , Japan. The statue was 18 m high. It was removed in March 2011.

Mobile Suit Gundam is about an interstellar war between a federation with Earth as its headquarters and the Duchy of Zeon, which is based on huge space stations. The battles are carried out by huge combat robots , so-called mobile suits, with an experimental earth combat unit called Gundam playing a central role. It is controlled by the approx. 14 year old Amuro Ray. His biggest rival is Char Aznable, nicknamed the Red Comet because the MS he controls are always red. The follow-up series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam takes place a few years after the end of the war, i.e. after Mobile Suit Gundam. Nevertheless it shows some parallels and some characters from Mobile Suit Gundam appear again.

In addition to the television series, a version of the story appeared as a manga in 1979, which so far comprises two volumes and was published by Akita Shoten . In addition to being broadcast on Japanese television, the series also made it to the United States and Italy .
The series was later combined and slightly revised and re-released in the form of three feature films. Bandai announced that it will release these films on DVD. The release announced for December 21, 2007 will contain the original sound in the mono mix, while the image material has been read in again and an HD master is now used as the source for processing.
