Aincrad

On November 6, 2022 the VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game ) Sword Art Online (SAO) starts , the specialty of which is that players are completely immersed in a virtual reality of a medieval fantasy world called Aincrad ( ア イ ン ク ラ ッ ド , Ainkuraddo ) can immerse themselves and, through the reproduction of all sensory perceptions, have the imagination of actually living in them. This happens because the players use a device called NerveGear ( ナ ー ヴ ギ ア , Nāvugia ), which can read out and stimulate the sensory and motor areas in the brain directly. Similar to an MMORPG, players can gain experience points by killing monsters, which allow them to level up. The following applies: the more powerful the monster, the more experience points the player receives. The higher a player's level, the stronger the player is in battle.

One of the 10,000 players is the student Kazuto Kirigaya under the pseudonym Kirito, who had already taken part in the beta test of the game. After a while he notices that he can no longer log out and shortly afterwards the developer of the game and the underlying NerveGear technology, Akihiko Kayaba, announces that players can only leave this world after the bosses of all 100 levels of Aincrad have been defeated . A death in this world as well as the removal of the NerveGear automatically leads to death in the real world.

At the same time, another problem arises : Each level only houses a certain amount of NPC monsters and raw materials. This means it is not possible for all players to level up. However, the higher your level, the better you are in battle and the higher your chance of survival.

Kirito, who as a beta tester already knows the lowest levels, knows where the monsters are, which let him level up the fastest. So he decides to farm these monsters on his own as quickly as possible in order to level up. The other players insult him as a mixture of beta tester and cheater , as a "beater".

After a month the first level is done, at which point 2000 people have already died, some of them also by suicide in the hope that Kayaba's words were lied. A group of around 500 players emerges who have actively committed themselves to completing the game, either in guilds or as lone fighters. The latter also includes Kirito, who rises to become the second strongest player. The main storyline begins in October 2024. The 6,000 remaining players have advanced to level 74.

Kirito happens to meet Asuna, who - unusual for Aincrad, which is mainly inhabited by male players - has made it to the position of deputy guild master of the Knights of the Blood Oath ( 血盟 騎士 団Ketsumei Kishidan , translated: "Blood Brotherhood Knight Order"), in short: KoB for Knights of Blood , the strongest guild in Aincrad to come up and superior because of their high self Kirito speed nicknamed Senko ( 閃光 reads "lightning"). In addition, she is considered the most attractive player, especially since all players appear in their real shape in the game. This forces Kirito to form a group with her and seems to run away from her bodyguards, so that Kirito duels with her bodyguard Kuradeel. Both meet Kirito's old friend Klein ( ク ラ イ ン , Kurain ) and his little guild Fūrinkazan ( 風 林 火山 ) and shortly afterwards a delegation of the largest but rather weak guild Aincrad Kaihōgun ( ア イ ン ク ラ ッ ド 解放軍 , Ainkuraddo kaihōcrad -free ")" who want to attack the final boss of this level. Out of concern for Kirito the group follows this after some time and shocked to know that unlike previous bosses work here no teleport crystals that are normally used to flee in mortal danger, then Kirito and the others decide the Aincrad Kaihōgun to help. Although the final boss can usually only be defeated with a much larger number of players, Kirito manages to defeat the monster shortly before his own death with his unique skill Nitōryū ( 二 刀 流 , "two swords style"). Shocked that Kirito almost died, Asuna tells him that she wants to ask for an exemption from her guild activities in order to be able to party with him longer, but comes back with the bad news that Guildmaster Heathcliff will only meet her after a duel wants to let go with Kirito, in whose defeat Kirito would have to join the guild. Heathcliff is considered the strongest player, whose HP has never reached the yellow area, and also has a unique skill called Shinseiken ( 神聖 剣 , "holy sword"), which gives him an almost insurmountable defense. Kirito narrowly loses the duel, under the impression that Heathcliff is moving faster than the game allows. He has to join the guild, whereby the first training with Kuradeel and another guild member is due. During a rest it turns out that Kuradeel is a member of the guild Laughing Coffin , which specializes in killing other players. Kuradeel has put a paralysis poison into the water of Kirito and the other guild member in order to kill both, so that he can finally return as the only survivor and thereby receive Asuna's approval. Just before he kills Kirito, Kirito is rescued by Asuna, whereupon they both confess their love. They both spend the night together, get married and spend two happy weeks at a lake before being called back by Heathcliff.

You will learn that from level 75 the teleport crystals no longer work for all bosses and that the gates of the boss room are automatically closed when entering, so that the fights become even more grueling and therefore your help is needed. The attack party with Heathcliff, Kirito, Asuna, Klein and other strong players attacks the final boss from level 75, and they realize that the monster is a giant millipede with two crescent claws that kills three teammates at once with one blow. After an hour of fighting and 14 deaths, the monster is finished. Kirito notices an unusual expression on Heathcliff's face for this situation and, looking back on his duel with him, suspects that Heathcliff cannot be a normal player. Since Heathcliff's HP is just above the yellow area due to the fight, Kirito attacks him, which should move the HP display into the yellow area and receives the system message that Heathcliff is an indestructible object. Kirito then suspects that Heathcliff is Kayaba, which he confirms. Heathcliff says that he had intended to be the final boss himself on the 100th level, but offers Kirito to lead another duel without his immortality, with Kirito's victory the game being over. Kirito accepts on condition that if he is defeated, Heathcliff should stop Asuna from committing suicide. The duel goes in favor of Heathcliff, but just before the next blow kills Kirito, Asuna throws herself in front of him, intercepts the hit, and dies. The fight continues and Kirito's HP drops to zero. While Kirito dissolves, he still manages to stab Asuna's weapon in Heathcliff's chest and kill him as well. On a kind of transparent viewing platform above Aincrad, Kirito meets Asuna again and sees Aincrad dissolve. Heathcliff / Kayaba appears and tells them that all 6147 surviving players have been logged out. Kirito and Asuna then share their real names. In the end, Kirito finally wakes up in the hospital and goes looking for Asuna.

Fairy dance

Kazuto learns that Asuna and about 300 other players remain in a coma and that Asuna is to be married to Nobuyuki Sugo, an employee of Asuna's father. He receives a screenshot from the elven VRMMORPG Alfheim Online (ALO), which shows a person in a cage who resembles Asuna; But also that the company of Asuna's father has taken over the maintenance of the SAO servers with Sugō as department head for the last two years and also that ALO is operated by him. With the help of Kazuto's sister Suguha, under the pseudonym Leafa (in the German anime Lyfa ), he manages to get to Asuna. Nobuyuki Sugō used the 300 players to conduct experiments aimed at expanding NerveGear technology in such a way that influencing the sensory and motor parts of the brain leads to memories and ultimately emotions being rewritten. He wants to sell this technology on the one hand, but also use it to reprogram Asuna to be his "loving wife". With the help of Kayaba's remaining consciousness, Kirito manages to defeat Sugō, who appears in the game as the fairy king Oberon, and to free Asuna from the virtual world.

Phantom Bullet

Kazuto is assigned to investigate two murder cases in the VR MMORPG / FPS Gun Gale Online (GGO), in which the two people died in reality after they were apparently shot in the game by a player named Death Gun. With the help of the player Shino Asada, under the pseudonym Sinon, he takes part in a game in a competition in which Death Gun also takes part. Kirito can pose the player and finds out that several members of Laughing Coffin are responsible for the murders , who first spy on the addresses of their victims and then at the same time as their virtual murder by Death Gun in GGO in the real world by means of a succinylcholine injection kill. He and Sinon can defeat Death Gun. Now that both are winners of the tournament, Sinon detonates a grenade and they both become winners after sharing their addresses. When Sinon wakes up, her best and only friend Shinkawa Kyouji is standing in front of her door and wants to celebrate her victory. However, it turns out to be Death Gun and insane on the side. Suddenly, however, Kirito appears and fights with Shinkawa. Although he is given a lethal dose of poison, Shinkawa hits the exact spot where an electrode from the hospital EKG machine is still stuck. This will prevent the poison from getting into Kirito's body.

Mother's Rosario

After the incident in GGO, Kirito, Asuna and their companions are back in Alfheim Online (ALO), where Asuna from Lisbeth, after her long absence because of a family visit to Kyoto, on a powerful and mysterious swordsman with the pseudonym Zekken ( 絶 剣 , German "absolute sword") is made aware. This hitherto completely unknown fighter takes part in ALO fighting tournaments every month and beats his competitors without any problems. Even Kirito was able to feel the strength of Zekken. Asuna shows her interest in the unknown newcomer as the conversation with Lisbeth and Kirito's sister Leafa progresses. On the one hand because of Zekken's Original Sword Skill (OSS), on the other hand because of an incident between Kirito and Zekken that is said to have occurred during the fight. Kirito, however, is silent about the whole thing. Meanwhile, in real life, Asuna gets into an argument with her strict, narrow-minded mother about virtual reality and Asuna's future. Asuna withdraws to her room angrily. Shortly afterwards, the group around Asuna sets off in the newly built Aincrad in ALO to a deserted island where Zekken is waiting for challengers from the nine fairy kingdoms. There they discover that the swordsman Zekken is a woman. Zekken accepts Asuna's challenge and a spectacular duel ensues. Shortly before the final blow, however, Zekken stops her OSS, which is otherwise decisive for the duel, and finds Asuna worthy of helping her. Asuna is introduced to her guild, the Sleeping Knights ( ス リ ー ピ ン グ ・ ナ イ ツ , Surīpingu Naitsu ) after the fight by Absolute Sword . The small group around Yūki ( ユ ウ キ ), that is the real name of Zekken, has set itself the goal of achieving something great. For this they need Asuna's help, because they can no longer spend much time together and want to break up soon. Asuna joins the group and notices that something important is being kept from her. After seven of them have defeated the boss of the 27th level, the Sleeping Knights turn away from Asuna. With Kazuto's help, Asuna finds out that Yūki is in a research hospital. Asuna learns the details from Yūki's doctor. Yūki lives in the virtual world thanks to a NerveGear modified for medical purposes. Then Yūki tells her that the guild members are seriously ill players. Some didn't have much longer to live, so they were pressed for time. Thanks to Kazuto's developed camera, Yūki (via NerveGear) and Asuna can spend a few days together in the real world. Ultimately, Yūki succumbs to her illness. Shortly before her death, she bequeathed Asuna her OSS, which is called Mother's Rosario .

publication

Sword Art Online is Reki Kawahara's debut novel, which he originally wrote for the Dengeki Game Shōsetsu Taishō ( 電 撃 ゲ ー ム 小説 大 賞 , "Great Dengeki Computer Games Novel Award") in 2002 for the light novel imprint Dengeki Bunko published by ASCII Media Works . However, since he exceeded the page limit, he finally decided not to send it in and put the work on his website in November 2002 under the pseudonym Fumio Kunori ( 九 里 史 生 ).

In 2008 he started again with Accel World for this award, where he achieved first place, so that this has now been published by ASCII Media Works. At the same time, the publisher offered him to publish Sword Art Online professionally, removing all but one short story from his website. The illustrations for the individual volumes come from abec .

The first volume in book form was published on April 10, 2009 and the following 24 volumes were published by May 2020:

The content of volumes 1 and 2 has been slightly changed and taken over from the web version, volumes 3 and 4 expanded, volume 5 almost completely rewritten and volume 6 new content. In Volume 8, two of the three stories were also previously available as a web version. The Alicization cycle began as a web version in January 2005 and is roughly the same size as all of the previous volumes.

The volumes can be divided into four cycles with different virtual realities:

  1. Sword Art Online (SAO) with the main plot in volume 1 and a collection of four short stories (a. Kuroi Kenshi ( 黒 の 剣 士 , “The Black Swordsman”), b. Kokoro no Ondo ( 心 の 温度 , “The temperature of the Heart "), C. Asatsuyu no Shōjo ( 朝露 の 少女 ," The Morning Dew Girl ") and D. Akahana no Tonakai ( 赤 鼻 の ト ナ カ イ ," The red-nosed reindeer ")) in Volume 2;
  2. Alfheim Online (ALO) in volumes 3 and 4;
  3. Gun Gale Online (GGO) in Volumes 5 and 6;
  4. Underworld from volume 9.

Volume 7 is a side story (gaiden) to ALO and volume 8 contains two short stories to SAO - Kennai Jiken ( 圏 内 事件 , "Incident in the Zone") and Hajimari no Hi ( は じ ま り の 日 , "The first day") -, and with Caliber ( キ ャ リ バ ー , Kyaribā , referring to Excalibur and "[man of] caliber") one to ALO.

Not all published short stories are included in the volumes.

By early September 2012, 5.85 million book copies had been sold, compared with 4.12 million in June 2012 before the anime was broadcast. In 2012 it was by far the best-selling light novel series of 2012, compared to the runner-up Accel World . From November 2012 to November 2013 a further 2 million copies were sold, making it again the most successful light novel series of 2013. In the light novel guide Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! published rankings was Sword Art Online 2012 awarded as the best light novel in 2011 as the fourth-best and.

In the United States, the novel series was licensed by Yen Press and has been published there since April 22, 2014. The first volume placed at number 1 on the science fiction bestseller list published by Nielsen BookScan.
