action

In 2026 the new game system Augma, an alternative game system to AmuSphere, will be released. Augma has the function of simulating a virtual reality while the user is fully conscious. The most famous game for Augma is the battle-based Ordinal Scale , in which the skills of the players are sorted using ordinal numbers .

Asuna, Lisbeth, and Silica encourage Kirito to try the game after all of the bosses from Aincrad show up. Kirito takes part in a boss fight with Asuna and Klein. During the fight, the game's mascot, the virtual idol singer , appears and empowers the players with her singing . Kirito is unable to perform well due to a lack of physical values and speed. Eiji, the second strongest player by then, helps the group defeat the boss. Before Asuna can deliver the final blow to the boss, Eiji whispers "Switch", a function she knows from the MMORPG Sword Art Online (SAO).

The following night, Asuna joins Klein and his group to defeat another boss while they wait for another teammate, unaware that he was injured by Eiji the night before. Asuna continues to fight and is once again supported by Yuna. Klein and his group are ambushed by another boss opponent and Eiji and defeated. The morning after, Kirito is practicing using Ordinal Scale in a park when a girl in a white cloak appears, points into the distance, and disappears again. He meets Asuna, who theorises that Eiji could be a former member of the Knights of the Blood Oath , namely Nautilus , while Yui deduces that the spawn points match those in Sword Art Online.

Asuna, Lisbeth and Silica decide to join a fight again in which Yuna and Eiji also appear. Asuna is hit by the monster while trying to help Silica, who was pushed into the boss' attack surface by Eiji, and passes out. Asuna realizes that her memories of her time in Sword Art Online are starting to fade. During a hospital visit from Kirito, they find out that Augma is scanning the brains of the survivors of the SAO incident for memories. Kirito investigates a joint fight with Sinon against another boss that defeats another former SAO player. You see a glowing orb float from the defeated player into an ordinal-scale drone. Yui cannot get this orb as she will be excluded from the game. Later, the girl in the white cloak reappears, repeating her actions and then disappearing. Kirito and Yui discover that the girl has pointed to Touto Technical University.

Kirito visits the university and meets the developer of Augma, Dr. Tetsuhiro Shigemura, who refuses to answer Kirito's questions. Leaving the facility, Kirito discovers a picture of a girl on Shigemura's desk that resembles Yuna. Kirito discusses with Seijirō Kikuoka, who informs him that Yuna is the daughter of Shigemura and died in the SAO incident. When Asuna visits, Kirito promises to bring her memories back. He meets the girl again, who identifies herself as Yuna. When she tells him that his level is too low, Kirito decides to fight bosses on his own and, with the help of Leafa and Sinon, increase his stats by as many levels as possible.

Days later, all Ordinal Scale players gathered in a stadium to attend a concert by Yuna. Kirito confronts Eiji in the lower levels, who claims he knows a way to bring Asuna's memories back. Kirito defeats Eiji, who tells him that Shigemura is collecting the memories of the Sword Art online players in order to be able to reconstruct the soul of his daughter and download her as AI. He reveals that Shigemura would reach his goal faster if all the players were in one place. He adds that the drones that store players' memories have enough energy to damage brains and kill players in a way that NerveGear did.

When all of Aincrad's boss monsters appear in the stadium, Kirito and Yuna join the fight. Yuna reveals that Augma like the NerveGear has the ability "FullDive" and can use it to defeat the strongest boss. Before Kirito starts diving, he hands Asuna a wedding ring . Kirito reaches the top level of the Ruby Palace with Lisbeth, Silica, Agil and Sinon. You challenge the strongest boss, but are quickly defeated. Asuna, Leafa, Klein, as well as various players from Alfheim Online (ALO) and Gun Gale Online (GGO) come to support. Yui creates the abilities of all players saved in Sword Art Online, whereby they defeat the boss together. Akihito Kayaba's voice rings out, congratulates all players and presents Kirito with an extremely powerful sword as a prize.

The group returns to the stadium, which is still haunted by the monsters. Kirito, meanwhile the strongest player in Ordinal Scale, defeats the monsters with the help of his sword, while Kikuoka Dr. Shigemura in the server room of Argus, the now closed developer company of Sword Art Online, finds and takes into custody. Yuna recovers and fades the memories of all players as it was encoded from the data of the strongest boss. Shortly thereafter, Kirito and Asuna fulfill the promise they made in Aincrad and watch a meteor shower together. Asuna gives Kirito the wedding ring back and asks him to put it on her finger.

After the credits it is shown that Kikuoka, who is impressed by Shigemura's attempt at AI and soul reconstruction, brings him to Rath.

Reviews

Bernd Haasis from the Stuttgarter Nachrichten writes that the film fits in with the Japanese tradition of reflecting the possibilities and consequences of the media world. The plot, around the relocation of virtual actions back into reality, seems interesting. In addition, the battles are impressively staged. Nevertheless, according to Haasis, the script is not self-explanatory: Much of the complicated is explained in "overloaded dialogues", which even connoisseurs of the franchise do not find easy to follow.

David Herger from Filmstarts.de is of the opinion that the attempt to accommodate critical tones in the fantasy adventure was not entirely successful. If the film warns of the dangerousness of the game Ordinal Scale for human memory, it is criticism of unreflective belief in technology and authoritarian dehumanization. But this fizzles out with the realization of "Kirito and Co" that life in virtual reality is harmless and more communal. This mishap, however, fades behind impressive show values. This is what makes Herger in the fights of Kiritos and his companions against fantastic beings such as minotaurs and dragons , whose terrifying design is described as a feast for the eyes.

Filmdienst judged that Sword Art Online - The Movie: Ordinal Scale is a “funky science fiction animation film, sometimes watered down by extremely infantile surface stimuli”, which nevertheless “critically influenced the possible consequences of a computer in a remarkable way Consciousness "games.
