Macross Zero ( Japanese マ ク ロ ス ゼ ロ , Makurosu Zero ) is the name of a five-part OVA series that was originally released directly on DVD in Japan for the 20th anniversary from 2002 to 2003 . Directed by Shōji Kawamori .

The series is designed as a prequel to the original series Chōjikū Yōsai Macross from 1982.

action

The plot shows the events nine years after the crash of an alien spaceship on Earth in 1999. After the discovery of the alien technology, a world war broke out between the UN and its counter-organization Anti-UN.

In its confusion, the main characters Shin Kudo and Sara Nome are forced by researchers from the UN and anti-UN to awaken the bird man from the legend of the Mayan people who live on an island in the South Pacific and to which Sara Nome and her younger sister Mao belong. According to legend, the bird man is the last remnant of a protoculture which, among other things, was responsible for the development of humans . And so, according to prophecy, the bird man should test humanity for its maturity and - should it not meet expectations - be its downfall.

The prophecy that the bird man will be resurrected begins with the appearance of several variable fighter jets , which have the ability to partially or completely transform themselves into combat robots. Fighter pilot Shin, who crashes after a fight on the island, meets the natives there and with them the sisters Sara and Mao. Sara can hear the winds speak and divine the future from them. A love triangle soon developed between the pilot and the two young women. Meanwhile, Sara foresees the following fights, which also include the young pilot Roy Focker, who is said to be one of the most important fighters in the later wars.

continuation

The plot of the anime is taken up in the television series Macross Frontier , which appeared five years later . In the 10th episode, entitled Legend of Zero , the events of Macross Zero are the basic framework for the storyline in which Mao's granddaughter Sheryl has been in the Macross Frontier convoy for some time.

reception

The German magazine Animania particularly praises Macross Zero's animation and optics. In particular, the fight scenes in the air are complex and implemented with a lot of computer animation. The character design is more mature than in the previous works of the franchise and the contrasts of the setting offer a special charm: "The cool, highly developed machines [...] on the one hand and the idyllic, peaceful Pacific gem in all its vulnerability on the other" . The manga scene also praises the “virtuoso action scenes” in a “mixture of CG and classic animation”. In addition, there was an "unobtrusive, socially critical story, interesting characters and loads of allusions to other macross series".
