Zombie Land Saga is a Japanese anime series from the production studio MAPPA from 2018. It was broadcast between October and December of the same year. A second season titled Zombie Land Saga Revenge has been announced.

Four days after the start of the anime series, a web manga started on the Cycomi platform of the Cygames publishing company . The web manga is written by Megumu Soramichi .

In 2008, high school student Sakura Minamoto died on her way to an audition when she was suddenly hit by a truck . Ten years later, Sakura and six other “legendary” girls from different eras of Japan are brought back to life as a zombie by the necromancer Kotaro Tatsumi and they are brought together as the first zombie idol group, Franchouchou . Tatsumi tries to revitalize Saga with this group.

On July 5, 2018, Cygames announced the series and announced a collaboration with Axex Pictures . Munehisa Sakai was selected as the director . The script was written by Shigeru Murakoshi. The series was implemented in the animation studio MAPPA . Kasumi Fukagawa created the character design while the music used in the series was composed by Yasharu Takanashi . Both the opening song 徒 花 ネ ク ロ マ ン シ ー Adabana Nekuromanshī and the title in the credits 光 へ Hikari e were recorded and interpreted by Franchoucho - consisting of the voice actors of the main female characters in the series.

The twelve-episode first season was shown on Japanese television between October 4 and December 20, 2018. Crunchyroll showed the series with English subtitles in simulcast . The series was shown with an English audio track on Funimation . A second season was announced on July 27, 2019 under the title Zombie Land Saga Revenge .

The opening and closing credits were each published on a separate CD with the tracks Fantastic Lovers and Jellyfish . The two pieces were sung by Iron Frill, the fictional idol group from the anime of which Ai Mizuno was a member until her death. Both singles made it into the national single charts .

Sakura Minamoto ( 源 さ く ら , Minamoto Sakura )
Sakura was an ordinary girl in her lifetime who attended high school and later dreamed of becoming an idol . On the way to an audition, she was run over by an approaching truck and killed. She is the first of the seven zombies to regain consciousness after being resuscitated, with no memories of her old life. Her idol name is Zombie 1.
Saki Nikaido ( 二階 堂 サ キ , Nikaidō Saki )
A delinquent and the former leader of a female motorcycle gang who conquered the Kyushu region. She died in 1997 during a coward game . She is the elected leader of the idol group Franchouchou. Her idol name is Zombie 2.
Ai Mizuno ( 水 野 愛 , Mizuno Ai )
Ai was part of the idol group Iron Frill , which was admired by Sakura. She died in 2008 when she was struck by lightning while her group was performing in the open air . Since she doesn't want to be remembered for her tragic death, she tries to use her new life as a second chance. Her name at Franchouchou is Zombie 3.
Junko Konno ( 紺 野 純 子 , Konno Junko )
Junko was a rather reserved idol in her life and was famous during the Shōwa period in the 1980s. She understands in a plane crash . Since she comes from a time without social media , she has reservations about interacting personally with her fans. At Franchouchou it's called Zombie 4.
Yugiri ( ゆ う ぎ り , Yūgiri )
An Oiran that lived between the Bakumatsu and Meiji Restoration in the 19th century. Yūgiri has a habit of criticizing others when they give up, even if they do not have the task as their first thought. Her idol name within the group is Zombie 5.
Lily Hoshikawa ( 星 川 リ リ ィ , Hoshikawa Ririi )
Born as Masao Go. Lily is a transgender and was a child star during her lifetime . She died in 2011 of a heart attack from stress and mental shock from the onset of facial hair . She has no prejudices about having been reawakened as a zombie, but sees this as an opportunity to keep looking like a child forever. Her idol name is Zombie 6.
Tae Yamada ( 山田 た え , Yamada Tae )
Tae is the only legendary zombie without a title and needs to regain consciousness. Albeit inadvertently, she is the namesake of the Idol group. Her idol name is Zombie 0.

Kotaro Tatsumi ( 巽 幸 太郎 , Tatsumi Kōtarō )
An obsessed producer and necromancer who wakes up Sakura and the other girls as zombies and unites Franchouchou as an idol group to revive the Saga prefecture . He is a skilled makeup artist and can make zombies look like living people. He carries a supply of dried squid with him to appease the zombies. It turns out that he knows Sakura from high school and tries to fulfill her wish to become an idol.
Romero ( ロ メ ロ )
Romero is Kotaro's undead poodle .

Awards and nominations

At the third Crunchyroll Anime Awards , which were presented on February 16, 2019, the series won in the category of Best Voice Actor (Japanese) . In total, Zombie Land Saga was nominated in five categories. At the fifth Anime Trending Awards , the series won an award in various categories, including for the best soundtrack, the best original anime, the best voice actor, as well as in the genre categories best comedy anime and best music anime .
