Eduard Frankfort (born June 21, 1864 in Meppel , † August 19, 1920 in Laren , province of Noord-Holland ) was a Dutch genre painter of Jewish descent.

Life

Frankfort was born to Salomon Simon Frankfort and Dine Bendien-Frankfort. He was the youngest of eight children in a traditional merchant family. When he was eleven, his family moved to Amsterdam .

Since the age of eleven he received training as a visual artist in Valentin Bing's studio . From 1879 to 1887 he studied at the Koninklijke Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam with August Allebé . He then studied painting for three months at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp .

Eduard Frankfort stayed in Amsterdam until 1905 and worked as a genre painter. Many of his paintings depict Jewish religious subjects. Like many of his contemporaries, he was influenced by the Laren school . In 1903 he was awarded a gold medal by " Arti et Amicitiae ".

In 1905 he followed his sister to South Africa , where he spent a year. He painted portraits and genre pictures there.

After his stay in South Africa, Eduard Frankfort returned to Amsterdam, where he married Klara Kloots in 1911. The couple lived on Beethovenstraat in Amsterdam and had four children.

Eduard Frankfort was a member of several artist societies, including "Arti et Amicitiae" and " Pulchri Studio ".

His works have been awarded medals at art exhibitions in Paris , St. Louis , Arnhem and Barcelona . He died at the age of 56.
