action
When she started high school, Mari Tamaki decided to do more than just live the usual school life: she wants to write a diary, skip at least once and set off on a journey to an unknown destination. But after a while she notices that, as in middle school, her plans fail due to her hesitation and lack of strength to overcome. Then she meets her classmate Shirase Kobuchizawa at the train station and learns that she earns money on the side to travel to the Antarctic. Many laugh at Shirase for her plan, but because her mother is missing on an expedition, she really wants to go there. Mari is enthusiastic about her plan and wants to help her - Shirase asks her if she wants to travel with her.
To finance the trip, Mari works in a small shop where she meets Hinata Miyake. The girl is just as bright as Mari, but does not go to school. She works a lot and learns herself on the side so that she can take the university exam later. But in order to at least experience something in her youth, she wants to accompany the two on their journey. Now the three of them, they still have to get permission to join the next expedition with civilians. The participants, however, know Shirase - and her mother - and decline. The expedition is in need of money, but they don't want Shirase's savings. They advertise that Internet celebrity Yuzuki Shiraishi accompanies and reports on the trip. Shiraishi, the same age as the other three girls - but doesn't feel like it. Due to her fame and the many appointments, she has never been able to find friends and now does not want to travel for months. She therefore asks the three girls whether they can swap places with her. In contrast, however, Shiraishi's mother and manager is. Finally the four become friends and want to start the expedition together. Before that, like the other participants, they must take preparatory courses and train, for example, orientation in the snow desert. Mari must also earn her parents' permission by passing all pre-expedition exams.
As the departure approaches, the four begin to say goodbye to their fellow human beings for a long time. Mari almost argues with her sandpit friend Megumi. She admits to having torpedoed the trip the whole time by spreading rumors at school and with Mari's parents because she is jealous of the four friends and wanted Mari to herself as before. Now she feels bad about herself, but Mari forgives her and refuses to end the friendship. So the four girls set out on their journey: first by flight to Singapore and on to Fremantle , where the icebreaker is waiting. On board, they have to submit to the routine of the expedition, filming the reports from the expedition with Yuzuki and getting used to the crossing through the stormy seas. After a few problems, they eventually find pleasure in the rough sides of the adventure.
When they arrive at the Shōwa station in Antarctica, the four friends are still involved in the work and deliver their reports. Eventually they can travel to the Inland station where Shirase's mother died. There they look for something they might have left behind and find a picture with their daughter and her laptop. He has received all of the thousands of messages that Shirase has written her for years. Through her stay in Antarctica, Shirase can finally understand what fascinated her mother about this world and why she came here. Before leaving at the end of summer, the girls agree to travel together to Antarctica one more time in winter.
