action

The main role is played by so-called autonomous correspondence assistants (Japanese 手記 人形 Jidō Shuki Ningyō , eng. Auto Memory Dolls ), Akora for short , which was originally designed by a researcher named Dr. Orland to help his blind wife Molly write novels; later they also wrote letters for people who could not write themselves. Nowadays the term can be compared to a ghostwriter . The story takes place on the fictional continent of Telsis and for the most part in the also fictional country Passionate (Japanese ラ イ デ ン シ ャ フ ト リ ヒ Raidenshafutorihi ). The plot follows Violet Evergarden, a young woman who tries to reintegrate into society after the war is over, as well as the search for the meaning of her life since she is no longer a soldier. She also explores the meaning of love as the story progresses.

characters

main characters

  • Violet Evergarden ( ヴ ァ イ オ レ ッ ト ・ エ ヴ ァ ー ガ ー デ ン , Vaioretto Evāgāden ) is a newcomer to the CH Postal Company and works as an Autonomous Correspondence Assistant (Akora) - a ghostwriter for people who cannot write or who are looking for help to express their feelings in letters to express. As an orphaned and nameless child, Violet was found by the naval officer Dietfried Bougainvillea. Her fighting skills became evident when she killed some soldiers who tried to rape her before Dietfried could stop her and when she continued to kill the rest of the soldiers present. Dietfried later brought Violet to his home and left her in the care of his brother Gilbert as a gift for his promotion to major. Dietfried intended that Gilbert would use them as a "tool" for the war, since he did not want to deal with Violet himself. Gilbert, however, treated her like a human being, teaching her to speak, read and write. He also gave her the name Violet and wished she would bloom as beautifully as the flower. During the war, she repeatedly played an important role in the battles. When she tried to protect Gilbert in the decisive battle of the war, she lost both of her arms. After the war was over, her arms were replaced with advanced metal prostheses and she decided to become an Autonomous Correspondence Assistant to learn the meaning of the words "I love you" ( 愛 し て る , Aishiteru ) - Gilbert's last Words to her.
  • Claudia Hodgins ( ク ラ ウ デ ィ ア ・ ホ ッ ジ ン ズ , Kuraudia Hojjinzu ) was formerly an army commander, today he is the eponymous president of the CH Postal Company . He was a good friend of Gilbert's when they served in the military. Hodgins tries to help Violet during her first steps in her new life, including to rid himself of his guilt regarding Violet's treatment in the military.
  • Gilbert Bougainvillea ( ギ ル ベ ル ト ・ ブ ー ゲ ン ビ リ ア , Giruberuto Būgenbiria ) is a major in the Passionate Army who comes from an aristocratic family. His real fate is unknown as his body was not found after the last battle in the war, he was pronounced dead. He protected Violet more than anything, his last words to her - "I love you" - propel her forward on her new path as Akora. The only memory of Gilbert that Violet has is a green colored brooch that reminds her of Gilbert's green eyes.
  • Cattleya Baudelaire ( カ ト レ ア ・ ボ ー ド レ ー ル , Katorea Bōdorēru ) is an Autonomous Correspondence Assistant who works next to Violet at the CH Postal Company as the most famous Akora. She was close to Claudia Hodgins even before his company established itself and was one of the first employees.
  • Benedict Blue ( ベ ネ デ ィ ク ト ・ ブ ル ー . Benedikuto Burū ) is a postman who works for the CH Postal Company . Like Cattleya, he had a close relationship with Hodgins prior to founding the postal company and also became one of the company's first employees.
  • Erica Brown ( エ リ カ ・ ブ ラ ウ ン , Erika Buraun ) is an Autonomous Correspondence Assistant who works at the CH Postal Company . Her client handling skills are poor, but she still believes in her job as Akora. She attributes this to inspiration from a novel by Molly Orland, a blind writer.
  • Iris Cannary ( ア イ リ ス ・ カ ナ リ ー , Airisu Kanarī ) is an Autonomous Correspondence Assistant who started working for the CH Postal Company shortly after Erica was hired. She comes from the small farming village of Kazaly, where she has always admired the image of the working woman and has since strived to become Leidens most popular Akora.

Minor characters

  • Dietfried Bougainvillea ( デ ィ ー ト フ リ ー ト ・ ブ ー ゲ ン ビ リ ア , Dītofurīto Būgenbiria ) is a naval captain and the older son of the Bougainvillea family, he is Gilbert's older brother. Although it was he who first passed Violet on to Gilbert, he treats her as a "tool" for war and is angry about the things she did to his soldiers during the war. Dietfried also blames Violet for Gilbert's death, claiming that she failed as a "war tool" to protect Gilbert.
  • Luculia Marlborough ( ル ク リ ア ・ モ ー ル バ ラ , Rukuria Mōrubara ) is an Autonomous Correspondence Assistant who befriends Violet during training school. She lives with her brother Spencer, a former soldier. He has developed into a guilt-eating drinker after he could not prevent the death of her parents in the war.
  • Princess Charlotte Abelfreyja Drossel ( シ ャ ル ロ ッ テ ・ エ ー ベ ル フ レ イ ヤ ・ ド ロ ッ セ ル , Sharurotte Ēberufureiya Dorosseru ) is the 14-year-old princess of the Kingdom of Drossel. Charlotte is engaged to the Prince of Wings, Damian Baldur Wings - a man ten years older than her - in pursuit of peace between the two kingdoms. Their relationship is declared public by exchanging love letters written by Akoras. While she is really in love with Damian, she thinks that their love is not mutual. Violet senses the girl's concern and hatches a plan with her Akora counterpart, who writes the letters for Prince von Flügel: Charlotte and Damian should write personal letters that they have written themselves. As a result, their relationship will be strengthened, but also the people of the two kingdoms will be made to wholeheartedly support the marriage of the two.
  • Leon Stephanotis ( リ オ ン ・ ス テ フ ァ ノ テ ィ ス , Reon Sutefanotisu ) is a staff member who works in the manuscript department of the Shahar Observatory. During a joint operation between the observatory and a group of Akoras, he is assigned to Violet. Because of the circumstances that caused his parents to be missed, he believes that love causes people to become foolish.
  • Oscar Webster ( オ ス カ ー ・ ウ ェ ブ ス タ ー , Osukā Webusutā ) is a famous playwright who became a drunken recluse after losing his wife and daughter. He aspires to write his very first play for children and dedicate it to the memory of his daughter. He confides in Violet so that she can put his ideas on paper.
  • Anne Magnolia ( ア ン ・ マ グ ノ リ ア , An Magunoria ) is Clara's daughter. She is a young girl who loves dolls and initially thinks Violet is a life-size doll. When she notices her mother's deteriorating health, Anne believes that visitors would take away the remaining time with her mother, but ignorant of Clara's intentions for Anne.
  • Clara Magnolia ( ク ラ ー ラ ・ マ グ ノ リ ア , Kurāra Magunoria ) is Anne's mother, who has an incurable disease and sees her fate sealed. Worried that her daughter would be all alone after her death, she asked Violet to write 50 letters for Anne so that she would receive a letter from her mother every birthday for the next 50 years.
  • Aidan Field ( エ イ ダ ン ・ フ ィ ー ル ド , Eidan Fīrudo ) is a soldier who fights for the moderate faction of Ctrigal. The country is in a state of civil war with extremists wanting the war back. Not sure what to do with his money, he decides to use an Akora to write letters to his parents and childhood friend Maria. His unit is almost completely wiped out in the civil war and Aidan is seriously injured. Shortly before his death, Akora Violet was able to finish the letters to his parents and Maria, which she also delivered personally.
  • Nerine ( ネ リ ネ , Nerine ) is a receptionist for the CH Postal Company .

Violet is a soldier in the Passionate Army who served under Major Gilbert Bougainvillea, to whom she was utterly devoted. Colonel Hodgins, an old friend of Gilbert's, comes to Violet to pick her up. They leave for the capital, Leiden, where Gilbert has arranged in advance that Violet will be adopted by the Evergarden family. She sees the Autonomous Correspondence Assistants (Akora) at work when they write a letter for an illiterate man who wants to declare his love for someone. Violet then remembers that "I love you" were the last words Major Gilbert said to her. Since she wants to get to know the meaning of these words, Violet asks Hodgins to be allowed to join the ghostwriting department. Impressed by the fact that Violet finally shows the first signs of acting according to her free will, instead of following orders from others, Hodgins accepts her request, although she is not a trained Akora.

Iris even suggests Hodgins fire Violet, but Erica defends her, partly because of her own insecurity about being a good Akora. Hodgins decides not to fire Violet. He gives her a new uniform to match the brooch Gilbert gave Violet and which Hodgins was able to find. Violet is overjoyed at the return of the brooch and agrees to an Akora training course. Violet and Benedict hurry to remove the explosive charges, which they succeed, but Violet also loses her other artificial arm in the process. Since the special envoy arrives safely at the destination with the escort, the peace talks can continue, during which the two countries Passionate and Gadariki officially agree on a peace treaty to end the war once and for all. Upon returning to Leiden, a popular event called the Air Show, where airplanes are loaded with letters that are dropped in the sky to rain across the country, is revived because of peace. While Violet's colleagues write their letters, Cattleya suggests that she write a letter to Gilbert. However, Violet does not find the right words to say to him. She is then invited by Dietfried to visit his and Gilbert's mother. She assures Violet that she does not hold her responsible for Gilbert's death and that he lives on in their hearts, even if the memories are painful. When Violet leaves, Dietfried notices that thanks to Gilbert's teachings she has become completely independent. Now inspired, Violet writes a letter to Gilbert for the air show. In this she tells Gilbert how she learned so much as Akora and that she would like to go on living in the hope of seeing him again someday to tell him that she now understands the words "I love you" a little better. As a result, she finally comes to terms with Gilbert's loss. The next day, Violet receives a new request for a letter and returns to work to introduce herself to her client.

Between the events of episodes four and five, Violet is hired by Irma, a famous opera singer, to write a letter to a missing soldier for her. However, Irma's specifications for the letter are on the one hand vague and on the other hand complicated. This makes it difficult for Violet to write a letter that satisfies Irma, even though she writes new versions several times. Irma's conductor and friend Ardu reveals that she is actually trying, with Violet's help, to write the lyrics for the song that she would like to use for her next opera performance. Determined to solve this problem, Violet decides to follow Irma in order to better understand her heart. Irma reveals to Violet that her boyfriend Fugo, Ardus' son, had to leave her to fight in the war and never returned. Even if she now understands Irma a little better, Violet is still not sure whether she can write the letter that Irma longs for. Roland, an elderly postman for the CH Postal Company , shows Violet an old military warehouse that contains many letters to soldiers who have gone missing or died in combat and have therefore never been sent. Violet finds inspiration from reading these letters and writes a new one that moves Irma and Ardu. Irma uses this letter as the basis for the song in her new opera piece. When Irma sings, the song helps her and Ardu get over the loss of Fugo. The song proves to be a great success, and wins recognition from the audience. In the end, Ardu is certain that one day Violet will understand “love”.

reception

Reviews of the anime adaptation

The anime adaptation was well received overall. In the IMDb film database , the series achieved a rating of 8.5 out of 10 based on over four thousand user reviews. On MyAnimeList , the series has an average rating of 8.60 based on almost 200,000 user reviews.

Tobias Maibaum from robots-and-dragons.de rates Violet Evergarden positively. He praises the level of detail in the animations, from which the plot also benefits. He also enjoys the "little ticks of the characters" that would reveal something about their character. Finally, Maibaum describes the series as "an audiovisual and emotional experience full of details that does not leave the viewer unmoved."

Oliver Armknecht from film-rezensions.de rates the anime series on average (5 out of 10) . He criticizes that the series becomes “far too often striking where it would have needed thoughtfulness” and that the audience drowns “in intrusive, melodramatic music.” Armknecht, on the other hand, praises the appearance of the series, especially the drawn backgrounds. Overall, however, the series relies too much on kitsch for him.
