The arson attack on the Japanese studio Kyōto Animation occurred on July 18, 2019 in Fushimi-ku , Kyōto . A 41-year-old Japanese man started the fire by pouring a flammable liquid into several offices and over several employees and igniting it. 36 people were killed in the arson and another 34 sustained some serious injuries. An employee of the animation studio followed the perpetrator a few doors further, where he was then arrested by the police.

The event claimed more deaths than the Sagamihara knife attack in 2016 (19 deaths) and has been described as one of the largest mass murders in Japan since the end of World War II.

background

Studio 1 by Kyōto Animation, 2015.

The animation studio was opened in 1981 in Fushimi-ku , a district of Kyoto , and has been registered as a Kabushiki-gaisha ( joint stock company ) since 1995 after several changes in the form of business . The company produced more than 20 series and 10 films by 2019. In 2011 the company founded its own light novel imprint.

The company has received death threats over and over again in recent years . The company's president, Hideaki Hatta , said a link to the arson was not certain, as the threats were all anonymously sent. As early as October 2018, the animation studio switched on the police for receiving death threats against employees. Several derogatory postings were also published in an Internet forum between September and November 2018, which brought to light similar allegations as those of the alleged perpetrator.

In the course of the attack, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung reported on working conditions in the Japanese cartoon industry. Although the anime industry is highly competitive, Kyōto Animation treats its employees fairly. Animators are given a permanent position instead of temporary contracts and are given considerably more time to work on their projects. The studio is also known to hire more directors and screenwriters.

incident

On July 18, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. Japanese time (3:30 a.m. CEST), a fire broke out in Studio 1 of the animation studio Kyōto Animation . One person walked through the studio with petrol cans, which they emptied in the building. According to witnesses, the person shouted "Die!" And lit the gasoline. Since the building had too few emergency exits, the suspect was able to pour petrol over several employees so that they left the scene of the crime on fire. Immediately thereafter, the suspect fled the scene and was followed by an uninjured employee of the studio to a house in the neighborhood, where the police arrested the alleged perpetrator. The fire spread quickly in the building, leaving several employees trapped in the burning studio building.

After the fire was extinguished, at least ten bodies were found in the stairwell on the second floor. The alleged perpetrator was taken to hospital after his arrest for injuries. The extinguishing work, in which 35 fire engines were used, was over after three hours.

According to a press conference the following day, all material in the building, such as computers, was destroyed in the fire attack. It has been reported that the arson was one of the most fatal massacres in Japanese history since the end of World War II, and the building fire that was the most fatal since the 2001 Myōjō 56 Building fire .

It was initially reported that 26 people were killed in the arson and 36 others were injured, some seriously. At the time of the crime, there were 70 people in the studio. After the fire was extinguished and the rescue work completed, the number of 34 people killed became known. The autopsy revealed that 28 people died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Five other people died as a result of their burn injuries. Another person died from burn injuries in the hospital . On July 27, it was announced that another person had died from their injuries. Another victim died at the beginning of October, leaving 36 people dead as a result of the attack. A total of 14 men and 22 women were killed.

Ten of the 34 injured employees were life-threateningly injured. According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there is a South Korean woman among the injured . Directors Tatsuya Ishihara , Taichi Ishidate and Naoko Yamada , all of whom work for the studio, were unharmed.

The police have since announced that the identities of the people killed in the fire have been established. Out of consideration for the bereaved and at the request of the studio, the names were temporarily not published. On Sunday, August 4, 2019, the police released a list of ten fatalities, including the two directors Yoshiji Kigami and Yasuhiro Takemoto , as well as animators Futoshi Nishiya and Junichi Oda .

Perpetrator

The suspect is 41-year-old Shinji Aoba ( 青葉 真 司 Aoba Shinji ) from Ōmiya in Saitama Prefecture . After Aoba was arrested by the police, he was taken to the hospital with severe burns to his legs, chest and face. On the way to the hospital, Aoba confessed to starting the fire. He accused Kyōto Animation of plagiarizing a light novel he wrote . Further questioning is suspended until Aoba's injuries have been treated. An arrest warrant has since been issued. Aoba was flown to the University Hospital in Osaka for further treatment for his injuries . He was conscious again on July 26th. On September 5, 2019 reported that Aoba was out of danger, but by a ventilator ventilation should be. Aoba is now available. In November 2019, it was announced that Aoba only had a one percent chance of survival. He received artificial skin in several operations.

Aoba stayed out of school for the most part since he was in elementary school . He worked part-time for the Saitama Prefectural Government while attending night school. In 2009 he was released. Neighbors described Aoba as a hikikomori who doesn't leave the house during the day and instead plays video games . He is said to have attacked a neighbor a few days before the attack on the animation studio. The relationship with his family is described as disturbed.

Aoba was certified as having a mental disorder . He has already appeared criminally in the past. In 2012, for example, he robbed a Konbini in Ibaraki . He was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for the attack. The suspect fled the scene and was arrested by the Kyoto Prefectural Police near the Rokujizō train station about 100 meters from the animation studio. Psychologist Tamami Katada said Aoba developed symptoms of schizophrenia or thought deprivation and may have led to paranoia . Aoba said in 2008 that he had a mental connection with the assassin of the Akihabara massacre in Tokyo .

Investigations

The investigation into the crime scene began that same day. Several unused knives were found at the scene . When investigating the building, it was found that the studio did not have a sprinkler system or fire extinguisher because the studio building was listed as a small office building. Nevertheless, no deficiencies were found during the last security check in October 2018. According to the police, the building complied with legal fire protection regulations.

The entrance area was secured by a card system, but the entrance control was deactivated at the time of the crime due to visitors. According to witness statements, Aoba is said to have been in the immediate vicinity of the studio the day before the arson attack. A video from a security camera shows the alleged perpetrator near the studio the day before. Regarding Aoba's allegations against the animation studio, President Hideaki Hatta said no work was ever received by the company under his name. In addition, there was no previous contact by the alleged perpetrator. On July 31, the police and the studio's attorney announced that Aoba had submitted a work to a competition. However, this post was eliminated in the first round and was therefore not found in the records. However, the police and lawyer announced that none of the works produced by the studio resembled Aoba's novel.

According to the police of the Japanese news agency Kyodo News , it is assumed that the alleged perpetrator Aoba sent more than 200 threats to the studio via the contact form on the website of the animation studio. These are said to have initially been slander against Kyōto Animation and later turned into threats against employees, so that both the company and the apartment of the employees concerned were secured by the police. However, the police cannot directly connect Aoba with the threat messages, as these were sent via the Tor anonymization network and are therefore hardly traceable.

The police have since announced that the perpetrator's allegations of plagiarism are fictitious as a motive. On July 26th, police ransacked the suspect's home in Saitama and confiscated two cardboard boxes containing evidence, including his public address system. The police also requested a second arrest warrant, as the death toll increased to 33 after receiving the first arrest warrant. The police plan to arrest Aoba as soon as his life is no longer in danger. On May 27, 2020, Aoba was arrested by police after being classified as cured from his injuries. Aoba was supposed to be arrested in January, but his physical condition and the outbreak of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 ensured that the police refrained from arresting Aoba at that time.

The demolition of Studio 1 began in November. The annual Kyoto Animation Awards ceremony was canceled for 2019 as a result of the arson attack.

The data on the server in Studio 1 - including animated key animation frames, character design sheets and other documents - could be restored without any loss.

One week after the arson attack, a 40-year-old Japanese threatened the game developer Square Enix and announced a similar attack in an allusion to the arson attack as a "repeat of Kyoto animation". In addition, a 63-year-old man was arrested in Sapporo after he had sent a threat to his former supervisor via the messenger service Line in which he announced that this “could possibly be the Hokkaidō version of the KyoAni arson attack.” When interrogated by the police the person explained that it was a joke . A month earlier he was released from a nursing home as a carer .

Kyōto Animation has announced memorial services for November 3rd and 4th in the conference center of the Miyako Fair in Kyōto, which is open to the public. In addition, the names of all victims were recorded in the credits of the Violet Evergarden film .
