The Kyodo Tsūshinsha ( Jap. 一般社団法人共同通信社 , Ippan Shadan Hojin ~ , English. Kyodo News ) is a Japanese non-profit - news agency . Its headquarters are in Minato , Tokyo Prefecture .
Kyodo News is the only news agency in the world that still transmits its news via weather fax mode on shortwave .
The news agency has more than 1700 employees (as of January 2009).
history
Kyodo News was created during the Allied occupation in November 1945 after the destruction of the Dōmei Tsūshinsha (Domei News Agency), whose economic department became the Jiji Tsūshinsha (Jiji Press). At the time, the company was based in Hibiya, Chiyoda , Tokyo Prefecture. From 1951 Kyodo began offering its news to commercial broadcasters . Since 1964, the messages have also been transmitted to ships on the high seas. A year later, in addition to the Japanese news, English-language reports were also regularly published under the name Kyodo World Services . In 1966 the company moved to Toranomon, Minato in Tokyo Prefecture. The radio and television department was expanded to include moving images in 1986 . In 2003 the news agency moved to its current headquarters, the completed Shiodome Media Tower. In 2005 the Japanese and English news were expanded to include a Chinese offering. Until 2010 Kyodo News was organized as a corporation under public law ( shadan-hōjin , English incorporated association ).
