Naoko Yamada

Naoko Yamada ( 山田 尚 子 Yamada Naoko , born November 28, 1984 in Gunma Prefecture ) is a Japanese animator and film director .

Life

Yamada was born on November 28, 1984 in Gunma Prefecture. Even as a child she drew characters from Patlabor and the Dragonball series. In elementary school she played in the volleyball club; in high school , she joined the tennis and photography club. Naoko Yamada studied fine arts at Kyoto University of Art and Design , specializing in oil painting , and was a member of the university's Special Effects Club.

Career

Yamada planned to work in the film industry after graduating from university , but abandoned that plan when she started at the animation studio Kyōto Animation after seeing a commercial from the studio. Her first job at Kyōto Animation was tweening the anime series Inu Yasha . She was later promoted to key artist in the anime adaptation of the same name based on the computer game Air .

After directing an episode of the Clannad anime series , she was asked to do her first job directing an entire anime series. Yamada made her debut as principal director for K-On! . This was very successful, so that a second season and several movies were produced. In 2013 Naoko Yamada directed the anime adaptation Tamako Market and the accompanying feature film Tamako Love Story a year later. Yamada received the New Face Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival for the feature film, for which she was also responsible for the storyboard and wrote the lyrics of the opening song Everybody Loves Somebody .

Naoko Yamada developed the anime film A Silent Voice , which is based on the manga of the same name , and was released in Japan in September 2016 . The film grossed 2.3 billion yen in Japan alone and received numerous nominations and awards, including the Mainichi Eiga Concours and a Japan Academy Prize .

Yamada's newest feature film, Liz and a Blue Bird , which goes to the anime franchise Sound! Euphonium , celebrated its cinema premiere in Japan in April 2018.
