Sasha Mashin

Aleksandr "Sacha" Machin ( Russian Александр Махин , English transcription Alexandr Mashin or Sasha Mashin , * 1976 in Leningrad , Soviet Union ) is a Russian jazz drummer .

Mashin grew up in what is now Saint Petersburg, where he received classical percussion training. As a drummer he is self-taught ; his role models were musicians like Buddy Rich , Max Roach , Tony Williams and Elvin Jones . From 1995 he worked in the St. Petersburg jazz scene when Igor Butman brought him to his quartet after his return from the USA. From 1997 he also worked in Butmans Club in Moscow and then played in the MosGorTrio for the next ten years, which consisted of the pianist Yakov Okun and the bassist Anton Revnuk and Makar Novikov . He has also performed with guest musicians such as Johnny Griffin , Benny Golson , James Spaulding , Kenny Barron , Eddie Henderson , Lew Tabackin , Donny McCaslin and Mark Turner . From the 2000s he toured Russia with a trio line-up (with Makar Novikov and Alexey Ivannikov ) and with Ivan Farmakovsky , Alexey Bekker , Vladimir Nesterenko , JD Walter , Josh Evans and Alex Sipiagin , on whose album New Path (2014) he was involved. Further recordings were made with Sergey Gusyatinsky's St. Petersburg Big-Band ( It's Wonderful , 2006) and Shahin Novrasli ( Live in Prague Castle , 2006, with Nathan Peck ). Under his own name, he released the album Out of the Box in 2018 , u. a. with Sipiagin, Zhenya Strigalev , Misha Tsiganov and Boris Kozlov and numerous guest soloists such as the singer Hiske Oosterwijk .
