Misha Tsiganov

Mikhail "Misha" Tsiganov (German transcription Michail "Mischa" Zyganow ( Russian Михаил "Миша" Цыганов ), * 1966 in Leningrad ) is a Russian jazz musician ( piano , composition ) of the Post Bop who lives in the United States . According to Jazz Weekly , he has a warm touch on the keys, with a tendency towards lyrical play.

Live and act

Misha Tsiganov was born into a family of artists; his father was a sculptor and his mother a music teacher. He began playing the piano at the age of six and graduated from the Mussorgsky Conservatory of Music. In 1990 he received the award-winning diploma of the All-Russian jazz competition. In 1991 he was invited by Gary Burton to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston; two years later he moved to New York. Since then he has been working in the local jazz scene; first recordings were made in 2000 with Norman Hedman's band Tropique ( Taken By Surprise , Palmetto Records ). From the 2000s in the New York jazz scene worked a. a. with Jed Levy , Chico Freeman ( Out of Many Comes the One ), Joe Chambers , Sasha Mashin , Gabriel Espinosa and Hendrik Meurkens ; with his brother, the vibraphonist Alexei Tsiganov, he recorded the album Tsiganov Brothers in 2003 . Under his own name, he self-published the albums Always Going West (2007, with Boris Kozlov , Gene Jackson ) and (expanded to include Donny McCaslin and Alex Sipiagin ) Dedication (2011).

In 2014, Criss Cross Jazz released his album The Artistry of the Standard , which he recorded with Seamus Blake , Alex Sipiagin, Boris Kozlov and Donald Edwards . He then arranged songs by Wayne Shorter (“Fall”), Charlie Parker (“A-Leu-Cha”), Wes Montgomery (“Four on Six”), John Coltrane (“Mr. Day”) and jazz standards such as “ Falling in Love with Love ”and“ The Song Is You ”. In the field of jazz he was involved in 35 recording sessions between 2000 and 2018. Currently (2019) he is also a member of the Eddie Allen Quintet (with Bruce Williams , Kenny Davis , Jerome Jennings ).
