K-On! The Movie (Original title: 映 画 け い お ん! Eiga Keion! ) Is a Japanese animation film by the animation studio Kyōto Animation . It is the first full-length film directed by Naoko Yamada .

The film premiered in Japanese cinemas on December 3, 2011. It was released on DVD and Blu-ray in Japan in July 2012, before a home video release in North America and Australia followed. The film was released in Germany on April 26, 2013 on DVD and Blu-ray.

Yui Hirasawa, Ritsu Tainaka, Mio Akiyama and Tsumui Kotobuki are in their third and final year of high school, and with it the departure from the school's pop music club is getting closer and closer. Azusa Nakano, who does not graduate from the school until the following year, finds it very difficult to get used to these thoughts, so the students decide to fly to London to celebrate their graduation in advance. Hardly having arrived in the English capital, however, the first orientation problems arise.

On September 27, 2010, with the airing of the final episode of the anime series, it was announced that the franchise would receive an anime film . Just two months later, director Naoko Yamada announced that she was considering a cinema premiere on December 3, 2011. During the production, Yamada received support from Reiko Yoshida , who wrote the screenplay , and Hajime Hyakkoku , who composed the film music, among others .

At the beginning of September 2011, Ichiban Ippai , Unmei ♪ wa ♪ Endless! and Singing , the opening title, theme song and closing title will be announced on the official website of the movie. On the same day, the official cinema trailer ran for the first time in Japanese cinemas.

As part of Scotland Loves Animation , the film first ran in the UK in October 2012 . In December of the same year the film was shown for the first time in Australia at the Japan Film Festival in Sydney and Melbourne .

This was followed by broadcasts in South Korea , India , Taiwan and Hong Kong .

Home video

On July 18, 2012, the film was released in Japan, initially in a limited edition on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Sentai Filmworks secured the license for a home video release in the North American market, where it was released on May 21, 2013.

In October 2012, Kazé Anime announced that it had licensed the anime for the German-speaking market and that it would be releasing it in the first third of 2013.

On the opening weekend, when the film was shown in 137 cinemas across the country, it grossed around 317.3 million yen , the equivalent of just under 4.1 million US dollars , which put it in second place on the domestic cinema charts . In total, the film grossed nearly 1.64 billion yen, a little more than $ 21.4 million, in Japan alone by early February 2012.

The DVD and Blu-ray editions of the film sold more than 220,000 copies in just a few months in Japan alone by early November 2012. The anime film was rented 45,000 on the film rental market. In the list of the best-selling animated film DVDs and Blu-rays of 2012 in Japan, K-On! The Movie in tenth place. In Germany , the film was sold out in public stores in February 2012.

The film was nominated for Best Animated Film at the Japanese Academy Awards. However, the award went to Goro Miyazaki's Der Mondblumenberg by Studio Ghibli .

The film features a café inspired by The Troubadour in London , which has been popular with fans of the K-On! -Franchises is sought.
