action

His dying father had asked the Indian-Canadian businessman Rahul to take responsibility for the family. His mother only lets his sister Twinky marry if Rahul has a fiancée who she only accepts an Indian woman. The pressure on Rahel increases when Twinky becomes pregnant. In a bar he meets Sue, of Indian origin, who pretends to be Spanish and whom he hires against payment to play his Indian fiancée. She is instructed in Indian behavior by Rahul. More than sympathy develops between the two of them, they kiss.

At Twinky's fiancé's bachelorette party, a guest announced that he had paid Sue for sex: she was a prostitute. Rahul, who thought she was a hostess, turns away and confesses to his mother and grandmother that she bought Sue for her role. Mother Seth wants to postpone Twinky's wedding again, but Twinky and her fiance have since secretly married. The ghost of his father and that of his late and rejected friend, Kimberley, summon Rahul to go his own way. Rahul visits Sue at her parents' home, they find each other again.

criticism

“Deepa Mehta is one of the star directors of Indian contemporary cinema. After three strong social dramas [...], which earned her a lot of praise abroad and death threats from the Hindu fundamentalists at home, she is now showing the light, cheerful side of her skills with her first film Bollywood Hollywood, shot outside of India.

With her hands full, she uses the dramaturgy box of the Indian popular culture that has just become fashionable here: Pathetic gestures are just as much a part of it as the rhythms of Indi-Pop and the colorful clothes and musical chants of Bollywood cinema.

The director's wise view of things has not changed. Because by telling the story of the love between the offspring of two very different Indian-Canadian families, she also manages, in a very funny way, a comment about the clash of cultures, which also includes the insight that India itself is by no means homogeneous. One must perhaps remember that Canada is the western country with - in percentage terms - the largest Asian population; ten percent of all Canadians, up to a third of the population of Vancouver and Toronto, come from China and India, and the trend is growing rapidly!
