Lisa Ray (born April 4, 1972 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian actress .

Life and accomplishments

Ray has a Bengali father and a Polish mother. She first wanted to study journalism , but was discovered as a model while in high school . The actress made her debut in the Indian mystery thriller Kasoor from 2001. In the also Indian action film Takkari Donga (2002) she played one of the bigger roles as well as in Deepa Mehta's Canadian-Indian comedy Bollywood Hollywood (2002), which won numerous awards and nominations - including for the Genie Award . She then moved to London , where she studied acting. This was followed by a leading role in the US comedy Ball & Chain (2004), in which she played an American of Indian descent.

Ray received the Vancouver Film Critics Circle Award for his role in the Canadian-Indian drama Water (2005), which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film . In the film drama The Hidden World (2007), which shows a lesbian relationship in South Africa during the apartheid period , she took on one of the two main roles alongside Sheetal Sheth . In the western comedy All Hat (2007) she played a former friend of the main character played by Luke Kirby . Ray and Sheetal Sheth re-portray a lesbian couple in the drama I Can't Think Straight , which was released in November 2008.
