action

The action takes place in South Africa at the beginning of the 1950s, during the apartheid period . Miriam is from India , is married and has children. The café owner Amina ignores racial segregation on many occasions. The two women enter into a relationship that has caused problems with the authorities and with Miriam's neighbors.

Reviews

Danielle Riendeau wrote on AfterEllen on January 29, 2008 that the film benefited from the currently rare authorship of the director, screenwriter and author of the novel. She highly praised the performances of the leading actresses as well as those of David Dennis. Ray brings wonderful strength and suppressed power of character into the embodied figure . Sheth's Amina is amazingly elated and you can like her. The amazing camera work shows the beauty of the South African landscapes. There are some parallels to the film Green Tomatoes , whose plot is also set in a café and where intolerance is discussed.

The lexicon of the international film said: “The mixture of love and apartheid drama is stuck in the middle, because wooden characters and an artificial staging do not allow any sympathy. Only the subplot about an older, multiracial pair of lovers develops emotional persuasiveness. "

Shamim Sarif won a Phoenix Film Festival Award and the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival Audience Award in 2008 . In the competition of the international gay and lesbian film festival Enchanted 2008 she received second place.
