action

The orchestra of the Kitauji High School Wind Music Club had previously participated in the prestigious national competition for school orchestras and was a master school. After the club's supervisor changed, they have since been unable to qualify for the prestigious competition. Thanks to the strict management of the new supervisor Noboru Taki, the students improve steadily as a group and also develop their individual strengths. The students compete with each other for the chance to play solos with their instruments. While most of the protagonists focus on the orchestra, other students prioritize their academic performance and leave the orchestra. After hard work and a lot of hardship for everyone involved, the day of the competition has finally come.

characters

main characters

Kumiko Ōmae ( 黄 前 久 美 子 , Ōmae Kumiko )
Speaker: Tomoyo Kurosawa
Kumiko, a first year student of college, is the main character of Hibike! Euphonium. She speaks regular Japanese, which is a rarity in the Kansai region. She is an indecisive person who is easily influenced by the opinions of others. She doesn't like her own character as she has a hard time communicating her wishes to others. She plays the euphonium . She lives near the Byōdō-in temple and is friends with the Shuichi's family. Her school bag is simple and she doesn't seem interested in excessive kitsch. Kumiko and Shuichi have been friends since childhood. She likes novels that include extreme content that contrasts with her character. She's a couch potato and doesn't get on really well with sports enthusiasts, except for Hazuki.
Hazuki Katō ( 加藤 葉 月 , Katō Hazuki )
Speaker: Ayaka Asai
Hazuki is a kind girl who speaks innocently. She's in the same class as Kumiko and she's tanned from being a tennis club member during pre-college. She likes the trumpet and joined the concert band club, but ended up playing the tuba . She is a cheerful, cheeky mood-maker and a person who likes to focus on herself rather than supporting others.
Sapphire Kawashima ( 川島 緑 輝 , Kawashima Safaia ) /Midori ( )
Speaker: Moe Toyota
Sapphire, also in 10th grade, is more petite than the other girls and looks younger than she is. She is rather shy at first, but thaws out with her friends. However, she is a little ashamed of her extravagant name Sapphire ( 緑 輝 , Safaia , dt. "Green shine") and asks everyone to use the more normal name Midori ( , dt. "Green") instead . She comes from a different middle school than Kumiko and Hazuki, the Seijo Middle School ( 聖女 中等 学院 , Seijo Chūtō Gakuin ), which has a very ambitious orchestra. Sapphire plays the double bass with devotion because she affectionately calls "George".
Reina Kōsaka ( 高 坂 麗奈 , Kōsaka Reina )
Speaker: Chika Anzai
Reina is a pretty trumpet player with long black hair. She is a member of the Concert Band Club at the same pre-college as Kumiko. She is considered a good student by others and even goes to the music room outside of the club's activities. Although she has a polite demeanor, the others shun her, as she often puts on a sullen expression. She cherishes and takes care of her trumpet , which her parents gave her when she was in pre-college.

Other important orchestra members

Asuka Tanaka ( 田中 あ す か , Tanaka Asuka )
Speaker: Minako Kotobuki
Asuka is in 12th grade and is vice president of the brass band. She wears glasses and tends to talk about music in great detail at every opportunity. Asuka directs the orchestra's bass register. Many members wanted her to take the role of president, but she declined. Like Kumiko, she plays the euphonium.
Haruka Ogasawara ( 小 笠原 晴 香 , Ogasawara Haruka )
Speaker: Saori Hayami
Haruka is also in grade 12, president of the music club and heads the orchestra's woodwind register. She has a sincere character, but is not particularly assertive, which is why she often wonders if she is the right person for the role of president. Haruka plays the saxophone .
Kaori Nakaseko ( 中 世 古 香 織 , Nakaseko Kaori )
Speaker: Minori Chihara
Kaori is another girl in the 12th and treasurer of the orchestra. She has medium-length, very dark hair and has a gentle character, which makes her very popular among the younger members. Kaori plays the first trumpet.
Shūichi Tsukamoto ( 塚 本 秀 一 , Tsukamoto Shūichi )
Speaker: Haruki Ishiya
Shūichi is a first year student. He is Kumiko's childhood friend; both went to the same pre-college. He and Kumiko are not in the same class as they are taking different courses. The two had fallen out after he made a derogatory comment on Kumiko in third year of pre-college. He actually played the horn , but after winning a round of rock-paper-scissors he was allowed to play the trombone . He notices minor conflicts within the Concert Band Club, which he reports to Kumiko. Because a second year student had a problem with a third year student who was not practicing enough and not good at playing, the number of second year students dropped dramatically.
Aoi Saitō ( 斎 藤 葵 , Saitō Aoi )
Speaker: Yōko Hikasa
Aoi is Kumiko's childhood friend and she is two years above her. They often played together because they lived in the same neighborhood. During pre-college, the two lost sight of each other. They found themselves again in the concert band club. She plays the tenor saxophone.
Noboru Taki ( 滝 昇 , Taki Noboru )
Speaker: Takahiro Sakurai
Noboru is the new music teacher at the Kitauji High School, at the same time the supervisor of the brass music club and thus also the conductor of the orchestra. He is extremely polite, very methodical, and especially popular with the female students at first. His calm but very honest manner soon made him known as the "cold, beautiful devil". He tries to strengthen the independence in his students, but also challenges them strongly so that in the end they achieve their common goal, the national music competition.
Takuya Gotō ( 後 藤 卓 也 , Gotō Takuya )
Speaker: Kenjiro Tsuda
Takuya is a sophomore student who plays the tuba .
Riko Nagase ( 長 瀬 梨子 , Nagase Riko )

Speaker: Aya Hisakawa
Michie is Kumiko's class teacher and the concert band club's vice-supervisor. She is known as a terrifying teacher.

Akiko Ōmae ( 黄 前 明子 , Ōmae Akiko )
Speaker: Haruhi Nanao
Akiko is the mother of Kumiko and Mamiko.

The costumes of the Rikka High School were modeled on the real costumes of Kyoto Tachibana High School, but in light blue.
