Webcomics are comics that are primarily or exclusively published on the Internet . This must be distinguished from comics that are produced for print and also published on the Internet. The transitions can be fluid.

It is unclear when exactly the first webcomics were created. The longest appearing webcomic is Argon Zark by Charley Parker, which has been published since 1995.

Most of the webcomics are basically free. Many writers create webcomics as a hobby and earn little or no money with it. Only the most successful cartoonists can fully finance their livelihoods through donations , advertising , post-printing and merchandising . Alternatively, companies like Graphicsmash offer webcomics for a fee. There are also specialized service providers like Keenspot and Smack Jeeves who offer free online storage for comic book authors.

In Japan, web manga are an integral part of the comic landscape and all comic publishers have their own web manga magazines or sites, some of which arose from earlier print magazines, so that there are around 100 web manga magazines today. Popular series also receive print publications in the form of anthologies and occasionally also adaptations as anime television series.

Awards

A prize in the Best Digital Comic category has been presented at the annual Eisner Awards since 2005, and the Harvey Award has also recognized webcomics with the Best Online Comic Works category since 2006 . From 2001 to 2008 there was the Web Cartoonists' Choice Awards, an annual event that focused solely on webcomics. In 2009, The Webcomic List Awards became the unofficial successor. In Germany in 2010, the Web- Sondermann Prize was announced for the first time, a prize that was solely based on German-language webcomics.

Subspecies

Webcomics created with sprites or backgrounds from computer games are also called sprite comics . For this purpose, the graphics are usually extracted (semi-) automatically from ROMs or manually from screenshots made of the running game, arranged into new scenarios and provided with speech bubbles and effects.

The South Korean webtoons , in turn, often differ in their almost continuous vertical panel arrangement without page breaks.

In 2008 the genre of Rage Comics was created , in 2009 Polandball .
