The renowned Shuchiin Academy is a private school attended primarily by children of wealthy parents. Miyuki Shirogane ( 白銀 御 行 ) comes from a simple background for school, but is an outstanding student and is known for his achievements even beyond his school. He heads the student council and is represented by Kaguya Shinomiya ( 四 宮 か ぐ や ). The beautiful student is the daughter of a wealthy entrepreneurial family and is just as intelligent and clever as Miyuki. Rumors are already going around the school that the two are the perfect couple. And they actually develop feelings for one another. But both Miyuki and Kaguya have got it into their heads that an admission of their love would be a submission, so that they do not want to reveal themselves to the other under any circumstances. Instead, they both try to get the other to confess their love.

The manga started in May 2015 in the magazine Miracle Jump at the publisher Shueisha . In March 2016, the series moved to Shūkan Young Jump magazine , where it has been published ever since. The chapters have also been published in 18 volumes so far. A German version has been published by Egmont Manga since April 2020 in a translation by Yuko Keller. The manga is published in English by Viz Media , in Italian by Edizioni Star Comics and in Chinese by Tong Li Publishing .

Two offshoots are published in Japan: Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Dōjin-ban has been published on the Tonari no Young Jump website since June 2018 . The series is drawn by Shinta Sakayama . In addition to the main series, Shūkan Young Jump has also published the Yonkoma offshoot Kaguya-sama o Kataritai , which is drawn by G3 Ida , in July 2018 .

Anime series

Based on the manga, Studio A-1 Pictures created an anime series for Japanese television. Directed by Mamoru Hatakeyama and lead author was Yasuhiro Nakanishi . In addition to Nakanishi, Yukie Sugawara was also involved in the scripts. The character design comes from Yūko Yahiro and the artistic direction was Risa Wakabayashi .

The 12 episodes of the first season were broadcast from January 12 to March 30, 2019 on Tokyo MX , GTV , GYT , BS11 , MBS , CTV and TVN . Internationally, the anime was released by several streaming services, including with German and French subtitles on Wakanim . Since April 11, 2020, the second season with again 12 episodes has been shown on Japanese television and internationally via streaming.

reception

In 2019, the manga was the 9th best-selling series in Japan with four million sales. By the end of 2019, a total of 9 million volumes had been sold. In early 2020, the series was awarded the Shogakukan Manga Prize .
