ComicsVerse is a journalistic website in English mainly concerned with comic culture. News, reviews, analysis and interviews with artists and comic book writers are held.

In addition to these areas, the employees on the news site also produce podcasts , video clips , their own webcomics and news about politics , gaming , films , animated series and music .

ComicsVerse uses comics to draw attention to social grievances such as the representation of minorities in popular culture and politics.

history

ComicsVerse.com was started in 2012 by Justin Alba. Together with Kathleen Wisneski, who is currently working as an assistant editor at Marvel , Alba produced the video podcast and also held an event under the title Comic Books and Graphic Novels as Literature at Columbia University in the founding year .

In an open letter, Alba wrote that comics had saved his life because reading the works had enabled him to survive severe bullying and develop self-confidence. He stated that the goal of ComicsVerse is to help people through difficult times by creating a community of comic lovers and cartoonists.

ComicsVerse sees comics as an art form and fights against the prevailing tendency in schools to label comics as anti-literary. Since the start of the site, ComicsVerse has broadened its horizons and for several years now offers a platform for discussions about well-known comic series from DC Comics and Marvel as well as smaller independent comic publishers. Films and series belonging to the area, politics and culture beyond the comics scene are also processed.

The site also runs a special format at the New York Comic Convention that focuses on interviews with comic artists from DC, Marvel, Image and indie comics.

ComicsVerse has been part of Atabey Media, Inc since 2016 .

Intentions

The ComicsVerse creators define their mission as using comics as a platform to discuss social grievances in various areas such as racism and the unequal treatment of women and men. The authors of ComicsVerse examine and discuss diversity in comic books and popular culture.

Kat Vendetti, who among other things writes articles for the site, gave an interview with the BBC in 2018 regarding Ms. Marvel , Captain America and the first female Muslim superheroes. The site also discussed racial diversity in X-Men and The New Mutants . The site's feminist and queer communities collect articles on social equality between women and LGBTQ + people.

In 2017, ComicsVerse was featured in their Hatewatch newsletter by the Southern Poverty Law Center for their podcast The Dangers of Normalizing the Alt-Right .

Podcast

ComicsVerse's podcast has worldwide viewers and is gaining attention for its political , human rights , and social justice discussions , as well as its character analysis and coverage of comic-related events.

In 2017, a webcomic on the site received a Podcast Awards nomination .
