Her style is characterized by diversity and can best be assigned to alternative rock .
Band profile
Meaning of the name and motif of the songs
The current name of the band is a stylization of the Japanese term amazarashi雨 ざ ら し, which means something like “rain washed out”, “weathered”. The band members explained this name with the desire to compose and write lyrics from a perspective that expresses something “weathered” by pain:
“We compared the grief and pain that hit you in everyday life with rain. We are the ones who are weathered by it. Or we want to sing from this perspective "
You justified the earlier, completely opposite name, STAR ISSUE, with your songs at regular intervals - like a magazine, hence “ISSUE” - positive feelings such as happiness and hope - understood as “light of hope”, hence “STAR “- wanting to convey. The motifs taken up in the songs are often dark in nature and deal with various social problems such as loneliness, depression, exclusion, loss of zest for life, death and suicide. In many texts, however, positive messages can be discovered by telling them from the perspective of those affected who ultimately find hope. Other songs, on the other hand, seem to take these situations to extremes in order to serve as a warning not to ignore such problems.
Amazarashi, consisting of members Akita Hiromu 秋田 弘 and Toyokawa Manami 豊 川 真 奈 美, first appeared publicly in 2007 in a competition for young bands under the name STAR ISSUE. In this competition they received the Roland Prize from the instrument manufacturer of the same name. The STAR ISSUE group was assessed as follows:
“We would like to congratulate STAR ISSUE, who convinced with their strong vocals, a message that leaves an impression in the heart, and melodies, on the award ceremony. They have a simple acoustic style, but the lyrics that everyone can relate to and the expressive music are really great. "
However, the group only made its real debut two years later, now under the name amazarashiあ ま ざ ら し, on the Rainbow Entertainment label under Hirata Yukihide 平 田 幸 秀. Hirata was a guest at a radio station in Aomori during a campaign for another artist in 2008, heard one of the group's songs on a show about indie artists and then signed them.
Her first CD was called hikari, saikō (光 、 再 考 light, rethinking) and was a mini album released in 2009. Later in the same year two more publications were added: on the one hand the mini album “amazarashi / 0.” (Amazarashi rei ten) limited to 500 CDs - including a collection of poems and a numbered CD - and a guest contribution to the scrapbook inspired by a film. In 2010 the band finally celebrated their nationwide debut with an extended version of their previous mini album under the name "0.6" (reit ten roku), from now on under the stylization amazarashi, which is still in use today. In the same year, the group switched to the Sony Entertainment label. This year, this collaboration resulted in several mini-albums and participation in a first television production, as well as her first live concert.
By 2015 amazarashi released several singles and albums, gave numerous concerts and was also invited to appear at festivals in Japan, making a name for themselves in Japanese music magazines for their poetic style as well as for their harsh and real themes. Furthermore, the peculiarity of the band members to hide their faces in the shadows in music videos as well as in live performances seems to have given the group a mysterious image that is taken up in many articles about them. In the years that followed, a steady increase in publications and live performances can be observed, with collaborations with well-known musicians and bands such as Aimer and ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION taking place.
Amazarashi has reached the general public, including overseas, primarily through her work for several anime productions and similar collaborations. So they have the third intro song of the anime My Hero Academia (" Sora ni utaeba "), the intro for Rampo Kitan: Game of Laplace (" Spīdo to masatsu "), as well as the outro songs for the anime Tokyo Ghoul √A (" Kisetsu wa tsugitsugi shinde iku ") and the version from 2019 produced by Dororo (" Sayonora gokko "). In 2017 there was also a collaboration with the video game director and scenario writer Yoko Taro and his latest game NieR: Automata in the form of the song and music video Inochi ni fusawashii .
