content

The boy Tanjirō Kamado grows up as the eldest son of a charcoal burner. In order to take care of his younger siblings and his parents, he does a lot of work and even in deep winter he still goes from the forest to the city to sell coal. There the hardworking boy is popular with many. But when he returned to his family's hut one day, they were all robbed. According to the traces, it was the devils, of whom the legends tell and who eat people at night. Only Tanjirō's sister Nezuko is still breathing, so he takes her with him on the way to town. On the way, however, it turns out that she has also become a devil and thus a danger. You meet Giyū Tomioka, who hunts the demons. He wants to kill Nezuko, but Tanjirō wants to protect his little sister. A fight ensues in which Nezuko also protects her brother. Tomioka therefore finally lets them both live and sends them to his master Sakonji Urokodaki.

On the journey to master Urokodaki, the siblings meet another devil, against whom they have to defend themselves, and against whom Nezuko again protects their brother. She herself has to hide herself from sunlight during the day in order not to disintegrate and not be recognized by people as the devil. Arrived at Urokodaki Tanjirō apprenticed to him to become a demon hunter and one day to be able to help his sister to become human again. Finally, with the help of two ghosts, he succeeds in completing his apprenticeship and taking the demon hunter test: to survive a night on Mount Fujikasane, which is inhabited by devils. In the end, only a few of the examinees survived, including the fearful Zenitsu Agatsuma and the confident Genya Shinazugawa. They receive a raven as an ambassador who accompanies them and informs them of their assignments.

After the exam, Tanjirō receives a sword specially forged for him. He is sent with him on his first assignments, in which he is supposed to defeat devils that hunt people. He always carries Nezuko with him in a wooden box, protected from the sunlight. She is of great help to him in combat at night. Finally he arrives in Tokyo, which has already been modernized. He is amazed at the technology he has never seen before and surprisingly meets the devil Muzan Kibutsuji for the first time. This is the origin of the other devils and gathers a group of chosen ones around it: the twelve moons. When Tanjirō tries to chase after him because he hopes that Nezuko will cure him, he meets Tamayo and Yushiro. The two devils live peacefully among people as doctors and assistants. They want to help the siblings, but are then attacked by Kibutsuji's devils. After a tough fight, they decide to research the devils together and help Nezuko. Tanjirō is supposed to collect blood samples for Tamayo from all devils.

On his next assignment, the demon hunter meets Zenitsu again, whom he has to stop from flirting with a girl. Together they have to help three siblings whose eldest is trapped in a house full of devils. There they meet the wild demon hunter Inosuke Hashibira with the head of a boar. All three can kill the devils of the house together - in too much fear Zenitsu passes out and becomes a great fighter in a trance - but then Nezuko has to be protected from the irrepressible Inosuke.

publication

The series has been published in Shūkan Shōnen Jump magazine by Shueisha since February 2016 . He brought out the chapters in 20 anthologies so far. The manga ended with its 205th chapter on May 18, 2020.

Demon Slayer was not a hit before the anime was implemented as a manga, as Hiroyuki Nakano, editor-in-chief of Shūkan Shōnen Jump , admitted in an interview. In terms of sales per volume, the series was significantly behind other contemporary hits of the Shūkan Shōnen Jump , such as One Piece , My Hero Academia , Haikyu !! , The Promised Neverland and Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma . By February 2019, after three years of running, the manga had only sold 3.5 million times.

According to Nakano, manga sales would normally increase gradually while an anime adaptation was being broadcast, but Demon Slayer's sales instead suddenly skyrocketed after the end of the first season. In September 2019 the series had 10 million copies, in December 2019, with the publication of the 18th anthology, 25 million copies, and in May 2020 finally 60 million copies. According to chart company Oricon, over 45 million edited volumes were sold between November 2019 and May 2020 alone.

An English translation of the series is published by Viz Media , a French by Panini Comics , a Spanish by Norma Editorial , an Italian by Edizioni Star Comics , and a Chinese by Tong Li Publishing in Taiwan. A German version has been published by Manga Cult since April 2020 .
