The Promised Neverland ( Japanese 約束 の ネ バ ー ラ ン ド , Yakusoku no Nebārando ) is a manga series by author Shirai Kaiu and illustrator Demizu Posuka , which has been published in Japan since 2016. She's in the genres of drama, horror, mystery and Shonen classify. An adaptation as an anime television series was broadcast from January 2019 and shown in Germany via the video-on-demand provider Wakanim .

In the future of 2045 the children Emma, ​​Norman and Ray will live in the orphanage "Grace Field House". They are forbidden to leave the spacious property, but they are happy here and therefore do not even want to go out. Emma masters the learning tests that she is supposed to complete every day with ease, the property is large and full of variety. Her foster mother Isabella is also nice and popular with all children. When one day the girl Conny is supposed to go to adoptive parents, Emma and Norman leave the home and go to the gate of the property to bring Conny her forgotten plush toy. Outside, they discover that their friend is dead and is about to be eaten by monsters. From the conversation they heard that they were all intended as a high-quality delicacy for monsters in the home and that Isabella raised them only for this purpose. Soon it will be Emma and Norman's turn.

The three friends decide to leave the home and get all the other children out as well. But they soon notice that the orphanage is better secured than they thought. Meanwhile, Isabella notices that some children have revealed her secret. A game of cat and mouse breaks out between the children and the foster mother, in which the friends still do not know what to expect in the outside world.

The series was published from August 2016 to June 2020 in Shūkan Shōnen Jump magazine by Shūeisha . The publisher has also brought out the chapters in 20 volumes so far. These had sold around 380,000 each by May 2018. With the start of the anime series, sales increased significantly and the twelfth volume sold almost 490,000 copies in January 2019 alone.

A German translation of the series has been published by Carlsen Manga since April 2018, with 13 volumes so far. The manga is also published in English by Viz Media , in Spanish by Norma Editorial , in French by Kazé , in Italian by J-Pop and in Taiwan by Tong Li Publishing .

Anime implementation

On May 28, 2018, the 26th edition of Shūkan Shōnen Jump announced that the manga series would be an anime series. The adaptation took place at the animation studio CloverWorks , directed by Mamoru Kanbe , who was also involved in the creation of the anime Elfen Lied . The main author was Toshiya Ono . Kazuaki Shimada was hired for the character design, while Shigemi Ikeda and Yukiko Maruyama were the artistic directors. The total of twelve episodes were broadcast between January 11 and March 29, 2019 on Fuji TV in the amino acid block.

Prime Video shows episodes of the anime series in Japan ; in France and Germany , Wakanim is showing the series in simulcast. Crunchyroll , Funimation NOW, Hulu and Hidive broadcast The Promised Neverland in North America . In Australia and New Zealand received AnimeLab streaming rights.

A second season of the series was scheduled to air in October 2020, but has been postponed to January 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

The music in the series is penned by Takahiro Obata . The opening credits are Touch off by UVERworld and the credits are underlaid with the song Zettai Zetsumei by shu Nie.

Awards

The manga was nominated twice for the Manga Taisho Award , 2017 and 2018. In 2018 the series was also nominated for the Osamu Tezuka Culture Prize. In January 2018 he won the Shogakukan Manga Prize in the Shōnen category.
