Yōjo Senki ( Japanese 幼女 戦 記 ) is a light novel by the Japanese author Carlo Zen with illustrations by Shinobu Shinotsuki , which has been published in Japan since 2013. It was later implemented as a manga and anime , which are marketed internationally as Tanya the Evil and Saga of Tanya the Evil , respectively. The plot follows a Japanese employee who was reborn as a magically gifted girl in a parallel world and who is now trying to survive as a soldier in the world war taking place there. The work can be classified into the genres of action and fantasy .

content

When a Japanese businessman is murdered, an almighty being appears to him. The man refuses to recognize this as God and is reborn as a punishment in another world - as a poor girl in an environment similar to Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. The man, now as the girl Tanya Degurechaff, resolves to survive as well as possible and continues to refuse to believe in God. He calls the one to whom he owes all of this "being X". After a while, it is discovered that Tanya has magical abilities. She is trained by the military and is particularly powerful. She wants to use this to achieve her goal of a good and safe life.

But a great war breaks out between your country and its neighboring country. As part of the mage units, Tanya now has to go to the front, even if she is only ten years old. She will soon be recognized for her skill and will work on a research project. However, contrary to their hopes, this turns out to be even more dangerous than the front. With the intervention of being X, the project becomes a success against Tanya's will. Her life will only be saved by praying to God so that her newly developed magic crystal will work. With this it is quickly used as an all-purpose weapon of the army and wherever the enemy threatens to gain the upper hand. She treats her comrades and subordinates roughly and is so soon notorious and feared, even though she is so young. When she is ordered back to the capital, she only recommends her subordinate Viktoriya Ivanovna “Visha” Serebryakov for the officer career that now follows her away from the front.

The first location of Tanya's new magician unit is the principality of Dakia, which attacks the empire without knowledge of modern warfare and without magicians and is destroyed by Tanya within a very short time. Next up is the Northern Front against the Legdonian Alliance. In a daring landing operation, the Empire succeeds in landing in the rear of the enemy front and thus forcing the Alliance to surrender. After the fall of Dakia and the alliance, only the western republic remains as an opponent of the empire. When a rebellion breaks out in a city occupied by the Empire, Tanya is used to direct artillery fire on the city. She issues an evacuation order beforehand in order not to commit a war crime from a legal point of view. The city is then set on fire by imperial artillery. She then supports a surprise attack by the empire through operations in the hinterland, thus contributing to the defeat of the republic.

The end of the war is a long way off, however, as the remnants of the Republican armies flee to their overseas colonies to continue the war as an army in exile. The disillusioned empire is forced to send troops on. But during the fighting the Eastern Union also declares war on the Empire and Tanya and the Empire stumble straight into the next total war. The longer the war lasts, the more unlikely the Empire will win and the more dull Tanya and her followers become.

The plot in the light novel and the manga is interrupted by the research of a journalist from the "United Kingdom" who, years later, wants to write a book about the war. Although not explicitly mentioned, the scenes suggest that the Empire lost the war.
