Mysterious Girlfriend X ( jap. 謎の彼女X ) is a romantic His - Manga of Riichi Ueshiba from 2006 to 2014 as the anime was implemented television series.

The title means “enigmatic girlfriend X” in German, where the X stands for scissors.

action

Akira Tsubaki ( 椿 明 , Tsubaki Akira ) is in the 11th grade, to which a new student named Mikoto Urabe ( 卜 部 美琴 , Urabe Mikoto ) is being promoted. This is quite unsociable and has a habit of sleeping during breaks. At the same time, she suddenly starts laughing loudly in class. As a result, she is quickly branded and avoided in class as abnormal. Tsubaki Urabe wakes up one afternoon after school and sees her whole face for the first time, usually largely covered by her hair. He notices that she drooled in her sleep and left a small puddle of saliva on the table. On an impulse, he tastes it briefly, and although he is shocked by the act, he notices the sweet taste. The next day he gets a fever and can no longer attend school. After being absent for five days, Urabe visits him. She puts her finger moistened with her saliva into Tsubaki's mouth, who suddenly feels better. Urabe explains to him that he was not ill, but suffered from withdrawal symptoms. Contrary to Tsubaki's assumption that this was due to the composition of Urabe's saliva, this explains to him that he was lovesick. From then on, it becomes her daily habit to taste tsubaki of Urabe's moistened finger. A little later, Tsubaki asks her to become his girlfriend, whereupon she demands an unusual declaration of love. He shows her a photo of a student he was in love with in middle school and tears it up in front of her eyes, because from now on she is his love. She then explains to him that she laughed in class that day because she heard a voice in her head telling her that it would be her "first time" with Tsubaki, and she has been waiting for that moment ever since. At the encounter, he is not denied a quick look at her underwear, where he notices a pair of scissors attached to her panties, which she constantly wears on her body. As it turns out later, she can use this to cut the most complex shapes within seconds at a speed that the eyes can barely follow. Both then go out with each other, and the actual plot shows the continuous development of the relationship and the overcoming of difficulties resulting from it, as they can also convey their feelings or even dreams in real terms with the help of the exchange of saliva.

Development and publication

After Riichi Ueshiba finished the manga Yume Tsukai , he began to develop a follow-up work that was initially very similar to this one. In the original drafts it still had an occult theme and was about a girl from an old family with special blood and a boy who falls in love with her. After the publishing editors objected that this superstructure was not necessary, since girls appear to be for boys mysterious, developed Ueshiba's action Mysterious Girlfriend X . A fundamental theme for him was growing up, as well as the representation of a non-sexual relationship among teenagers, which is also evident in the fact that Tsubaki and Urabe do not kiss or even go beyond it and the "saliva exchange" serves as a substitute. In addition to the unusual plot, Jason Thompson, the author of Manga: The Complete Guide , also highlighted the sometimes surreal drawings of the manga.

The work first appeared as One Shot in issue 10/2004 (August 2004) of Kōdansha's manga magazine Afternoon . He then developed this into a series that started in issue 5/2006 (March 25, 2006) of the same magazine and was completed in issue 11/2014 (September 25, 2014).

This series and the One Shot - then referred to as Chapter 0 - were combined into 12 anthologies ( Tankōbon ):

The individual volumes are regularly reissued: on February 24, 2012, the 13th edition of the first volume was published.

Volume 8 was also published in a limited edition, which contained a radio play CD as a bonus, which also served as advertising for the subsequently published anime, as identical speakers were used. The limited version of Volume 9 came as a bonus with an OAD , i. H. a new anime episode.

The manga is also published in Chinese by Tongli in the Republic of China (Taiwan) under the title Miyang Nüyou X ( Chinese 謎樣 女友 X , Pinyin míyàng nǚyǒu X ). An English version was published online by Crunchyroll in 2015 under the title Mysterious Girlfriend X and has been published in book form by Vertical Comics since March 15, 2016.

Anime

In issue 2/2012 of Afternoon on December 24, 2011, the adaptation of the manga as an anime was announced. This comes from Hoods Entertainment under the direction of Ayumu Watanabe , who is also working on Uchū Kyōdai at the same time . The character design comes from Ken'ichi Konishi based on Ueshiba's template.

The first episode aired from April 8 to July 1, 2012 after midnight (and thus on the previous television day ) on Tokyo MX . Meanwhile, TV Kanagawa , Sun TV , Chiba TV , TV Saitama , KBS Kyōto , TV Aichi , AT-X , TV Hokkaidō , via satellite on BS11 and via stream on Nico Nico Channel followed within a week . The 13 episodes include selected chapters from the first five volumes.

An English subtitled version ran as a simulcast on Crunchyroll from April 8th under the title Mysterious Girlfriend X for the USA , Canada , United Kingdom , Ireland , South Africa , Australia , New Zealand , Denmark , Finland , the Netherlands , Norway and Sweden . The licenses for the North American video exploitation were acquired by Sentai Filmworks , who also stream the anime 31 days after Crunchyroll on The Anime Network and Hulu .

The limited version of Volume 9, published on August 23, 2012, was accompanied by a DVD with an OVA episode.
