Stomio ( Greek Στόμιο ( n. Sg. )) Is a coastal town in the municipality of Agia in the Greek region of Thessaly . Together with the monastery of Agios Dimitrios and two other uninhabited settlements, it forms the local community ( Τοπική Κοινότητα Στομίου Topikí Kinótita Stomíou ) with 553 inhabitants. Until 1927 the village was called Tsagezi .

location

The village of Stomio lies between the extensive delta of the Pinios in the north, a kilometer-long sandy beach in the east and the Ossa . The local community extends over 37.985 km² from the southern branch of the Pinios to the northeast flank of the Ossa at over 1000 m above sea level and borders there on the district of Nessonas of the Tembi community .

Administrative division

After the annexation of Thessaly to Greece in 1883, the place then called Tsagezi ( Τσάγεζι ( n. Sg. )) Was the administrative seat of the municipality of Evrymenes and was spun off as the rural municipality of Tsagezi ( Κοινότητα Τσαγεζίου Kinótita Tsagezíou ) in 1912 . The name was changed from the Turkish Tsagezi in 1927. The monastery Agios Dimitrios and the camping site Agios Dimitrios were recognized as settlements in 1971, followed by Apostolos Pavlos in 1981. In the course of the municipal reform in 1997, Stomio was merged with three other rural municipalities to form the municipality of Evrymenes and was their administrative seat. In the course of the administrative reform in 2010 , this became a district in the newly created municipality of Agia .

Moni Agiou Dimitriou

The monastery of Agios Dimitrios ( Μονή Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου και Αγίου Δημητρίου Στομίου Moní Kimíseos tis Theotókou ke Agíou Dimitríou Stomíou ) is located on Mount Ossaio. The Katholikon is dedicated to the asleep of the Theotokos . The four-pillar cross-domed church with lateral apses combines forms of the Byzantine tradition of northern Greece and the Ottoman architecture of the 16th century. The Katholikon shows great resemblance to the Church of the Prophet Elias in Thessaloniki from the second half of the 14th century and suggests that the original church construction goes back to the time of the palaeologists . Later, in the middle of the 16th century, the original church, which had already been destroyed, was radically restored. During the Ottoman period , the monastery flourished. Additions and repairs were made to the church in the 18th century. A fire destroyed the church in 1868, the walls were preserved up to a height of 5 meters. In 1921 the monastery was designated as a cultural monument. Extensive restoration work has been carried out on the Katholikon in recent years, and the associated excavations have shown that the original building dates back to the 11th to 12th centuries. Studies of the frescoes revealed the use of traditional earth pigments and minerals found in Greece and made no later than the 16th century, as well as the rare foreign cinnabar . No evidence of overpainting could be found.

Others

The main source of income for the inhabitants is summer tourism, and fishing still has an important position.

On the approximately 2.5 km long beach, the water quality has been regularly checked in accordance with the EU Bathing Water Directive since 2010 and has always been rated excellent since 2012 .
