Carl Butler

Carl Butler (born June 2, 1927 in Knoxville , Tennessee , † September 4, 1992 ) was an American country singer who was successful together with his wife Pearl as the duo Carl and Pearl Butler in the 1960s.

Life

Carl Butler recorded his first singles in the early 1950s for the Capitol label. He also worked as a composer. In 1952 he married the songwriter Pearl Dee Jones (September 20, 1927), who was the co-author of one of his pieces and who had already written a top 10 hit for Carl Smith . In the same year he switched to the Columbia label.

Although he recorded numerous singles of recognized quality, the chart successes failed to materialize. It was not until 1961 that he achieved a middle hit parade placement with Honky Tonkitis . In the same year the Grand Ole Opry took him under contract. A little later he made his breakthrough with Don't Let Me Cross Over . The song was number one for many weeks and was by far his biggest hit. Since his wife was involved in the recording as a singer, they decided to perform as a duo from now on.

With the great success behind them and always present in the country scene as a member of the Grand Ole Opry, more hits were almost guaranteed. Even if number one could no longer be reached, Carl and Pearl Butler made a number of respectable chart positions, including 1963 Loving Arms , 1964 Too Late To Try Again and 1965 Just Thought I'd Let You know . It wasn't until the early 1980s that they withdrew from the music business. Pearl died in 1988, Carl tried a comeback and died four years later.
