Brad Barron Renfro (born July 25, 1982 in Knoxville , Tennessee , † January 15, 2008 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Life

After his parents' divorce, when Brad Renfro was five years old, he was raised as an only child with his grandmother Joanne, who also died two weeks after Brad's death. Renfro was discovered in 1994 at the casting for the film adaptation of Grisham - novel The client , through which he became famous. He then appeared in Mississippi, the River of Hope , a modern Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn story that same year . A year later, Renfro took part in the Mark Twain adaptation Tom and Huck .

In the following years he was seen in both commercial and ambitious film projects, such as in Barry Levinson's youth drama Sleepers in 1996 and in the Stephen King film adaptation of The Model Student in 1998 , both of which reached a wide audience. In addition, he also appeared repeatedly in films that dealt socially critical with the youth problems of his generation: In 2001 he appeared in Tart - Jet Set Kids by Christina Wayne and Bully - These Kids Shocked America by Larry Clark and a year later in American Girl directed by Jordan Brady.

From the late 1990s, Renfro hit the headlines for stealing a boat and for repeated drug use. Even at the filming of Bully in 2000 the 18-year-old Renfro was a drug addict, and the director Larry Clark was not sure if he could finish the film. In February 2002, Renfro underwent drug therapy . In December 2005, however, he was reoffended when he tried to buy heroin from an undercover agent in Los Angeles .

Renfros last notable projects were his appearances in The Jacket (2005) and the role of Vincent in the Mafia - epic Streets of Philadelphia - Under traitors (2006) alongside James Marsden and Giovanni Ribisi , which in Germany only on DVD appeared. He also appeared in an episode of the American television series Law & Order: Criminal Intent in 2006 . Renfro had his last role in 2007 at the side of Jon Foster , Winona Ryder and Kim Basinger in the film adaptation of the novel The Informers (The Informers) by Bret Easton Ellis .

On January 15, 2008, Renfro was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment. According to a toxicological test on February 9, 2008, Renfro died of a heroin overdose . He found his final resting place in the Red House Cemetery graveyard in Blaine Ward, Tennessee.

After Renfro's death, it became known that he had a son who had remained unknown to the public. Renfro's stepmother Kim confirmed that Renfro and the child's mother had separated and that the boy was living with his mother in Japan .

For his leading role in Der Klient , Renfro received the Young Artist Award in 1995 in the category Best Representation in a Feature Film ; in the category of Best Young Actor in a Drama , he was also nominated for the Young Artist Award for his role in Sleepers (1996).
