James Vann Johnston, Jr. (born October 16, 1959 in Knoxville , Tennessee ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Kansas City-Saint Joseph .

Life

James Vann Johnston first studied electrical engineering at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. After graduating in 1982, he worked as an electrical engineer in Houston for a few years . From 1985 he studied at Saint Meinrad Seminary in Indiana and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Knoxville on June 9, 1990 . His first chaplaincy was in Oak Ridge . From 1992 to 1994 he was chaplain, school chaplain and teacher in Chattanooga . A subsequent study of canon law at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC , he graduated in 1996 with a licentiate . From 1996 to 2008 he was Chancellor of the Diocesan Curia. At the same time he was chaplain of a parish in Knoxville until 2001 and then moderator of the curia. From 2007 he was also a pastor in Alcoa .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on January 24, 2008 Bishop of Springfield-Cape Girardeau . The Archbishop of Saint Louis , Raymond Leo Burke , donated him episcopal ordination on March 31 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Joseph Edward Kurtz , Archbishop of Louisville , and his predecessor John Joseph Leibrecht . His episcopal motto is The love of Christ urges us on. (The love of Christ urges us).

On September 15, 2015, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Kansas City-Saint Joseph . The inauguration took place on November 4th of the same year.

In the United States Bishops' Conference he is a member of the Commission on the Protection of Children and Adolescents and the Sub-Commission on the Catechism.

Johnston is a member of the Knight of Columbus (4th degree).

In 2010 he was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master John Patrick Cardinal Foley and invested by Joseph Fred Naumann , Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy USA NORTHERN .
