Terry "Bam Bam" Gordy (born April 23, 1961 in Chattanooga , Tennessee , † July 16, 2001 ) was an American wrestler . He was best known as part of the Fabulous Freebirds .

Career

1977 to 1986

Terry Gordy began his career at the age of 16 under the name Terry Mecca . From the beginning of 1979 he entered under his real name and founded the tag team The Fabulous Freebirds together with Michael Hayes, which Buddy Roberts later also joined. The Heel team quickly became successful, winning tag team titles in a number of leagues. In 1984 they joined the WCCW and began a legendary feud against the Von Erichs (David, Kevin, Kerry and Mike). In the Jim Crockett Promotions (the forerunner of the WCW ), the group was briefly separated and feuded, but quickly reunited. For a very short time they were part of the WWF , but they left the league after they wanted to separate again there.

1986 to 1996

In 1986 Gordy won the UWF Heavyweight Championship and held the title for half a year. At the beginning of the 90s Gordy switched to All Japan Pro Wrestling and trained there for the first time with “Dr. Death “ Steve Williams a tag team. He also won the AJPW Triple Crown Championship , the league's highest title, twice. When Gordy and Williams came to the WCW in 1992, they feuded against the Steiner Brothers and were able to combine the Tag Team Championships of the WCW and NWA . In Japan, it was seen as a feud between the two best foreign teams, who also came from the two dominant, competing leagues (the Steiners competed for New Japan Pro Wrestling ). NJPW wanted to sign Gordy and Williams in order to be able to start this prestigious match in Japan, but the two turned down the offer out of loyalty to Giant Baba , the owner of AJPW. In 1995 Terry Gordy took part in the international death match tournament King of the Death Match , which was hosted by IWA Japan .

1996 until his death

Gordy was hired by the ECW in 1996 and challenged Raven to the ECW World Heavyweight Championship as "internationally recognized challenger No. 1" . He lost the match and then teamed with Tommy Dreamer , and again with Steve Williams. In the same year he joined the WWF as a masked executioner to support Mankind and Paul Bearer in their feud against Undertaker . In In Your House: It's Time he competed against Undertaker and was clearly defeated by him. Shortly afterwards, his time at WWF was over.

Gordy died of a heart attack on July 16, 2001 at the age of 40. His consumption of painkillers may have played a decisive role in this; in 1993 he had been in a coma after an overdose while on tour with AJPW and suffered brain damage.
