owner | All Japan Pro Wrestling |
Introduced | June 10, 1988 |
The AJPW World Tag Team Championship is the tag team title of the Japanese wrestling promotion All Japan Pro Wrestling . As usual in wrestling, the award of this title follows a previously worked out storyline .
The title was created on June 11, 1988 as a union of the two titles PWF World Tag Team Championship and NWA International Tag Team Championship . This happened when the then PWF Tag Team Champions Jumbo Tsuruta and Yoshiaki Yatsu defeated the NWA International Champions Road Warriors ( Michael Hegstrand , ring name Hawk , and Joseph Laurinaitis , Animal ). Similar to the AJPW Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship , the title was represented by four belts, two for each wrestler to commemorate this amalgamation.
It is the most important tag team title of the promotion, which also leads the much older, but less significant, All Asia Tag Team Championship .
