Mitsuharu Misawa ( Japanese 三 沢 光 晴 , Misawa Mitsuhara ; born June 18, 1962 in Yūbari , Hokkaidō ; † June 13, 2009 in Hiroshima ) was a Japanese wrestler . Mitsuharu Misawa has been one of the most successful wrestlers in the world since the 1980s.

In his career he was eight times world heavyweight champion (reigning since December 10, 2006), eight times world champion in team fight and won six major tournaments.

Career

On August 21, 1981, Misawa made his debut for All Japan Pro Wrestling . Until May 17, 1990, he wore a mask while fighting and was named Tiger Mask II . After a team fight, he asked his partner Toshiaki Kawada to unmask him.

On June 8, 1990, he defeated Jumbo Tsuruta in his first main fight in the Nippon Budokan . A month later he fought for the first time for the Triple Crown winner, the largest world championship at the time. Even if he lost to Stan Hansen , this was his breakthrough as a wrestler.

In 1991 he was allowed to win the AJPW World Tag Team Title in a team with Kawada . Misawa dominated All Japan Pro Wrestling through the 1990s, with multiple reigns as the Triple Crown and AJPW World Tag Team Title Champion . he had legendary feuds with Jumbo Tsuruta , Toshiaki Kawada and Kenta Kobashi . Misawa, who enjoys legendary status in Japan, competed in the USA for the Ring of Honor (ROH), Pro Wrestling Iron and WLW (from Harley Race). Misawa was also active in Germany, where he competed in westside Xtreme wrestling in 2005 .

After the death of the owner of the AJPW, Misawa left the promotion in 2000 and founded the Pro Wrestling NOAH together with other Japanese wrestlers . Here he won the GHC Heavyweight Championship three times and the GHC Tag Team Championship twice .

On June 13, 2009, Misawa was promoted to the ring mat by his opponents with a back suplex at a NOAH show and hit the back of his neck. In this impact, he presumably suffered a spinal cord injury and was unable to move. This spinal cord injury also caused a cardiac arrest, and the ring doctor who rushed over treated him with a defibrillator and a cardiac massage while he was still in the ring. Misawa passed away on the way to the hospital in Hiroshima City.

The Japanese was considered one of the best fighters of the past decades.
