The AJPW Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship (in German AJPW Triple Crown (triple crown, triple award) World Heavyweight Championship ) is the highest wrestling title for individual wrestlers at All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW).
history
The title was introduced on April 18, 1989. A "triple crown" is created in wrestling by amalgamating three titles that have roughly the same status. The AJPW had the highest title at that time, the PWF World Heavyweight Championship . This title won on April 18, 1989, the then NWA International Heavyweight Champion Jumbo Tsuruta in a match against Stan Hansen , who was also holder of the NWA United National Championship . With that all three titles belonged to Tsuruta. These were thus united to the AJPW Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship. This made this title the highest single title in Japanese doctoral studies.
The title is one of the most important in the wrestling business and has been held by some international greats. One of the most famous matches was that between Mitsuharu Misawa and Toshiaki Kawada , one of the few matches that was awarded five stars by Dave Meltzer .
After the formation of Pro Wrestling Noah from a large part of the AJPW roster, the title lost some of its prestige, which it was able to regain in the course of the 2000s.
Originally, the Triple Crown consisted of the three individual titles and a trophy. All three belts were given to Giant Baba's widow Motoko Baba in 2012 , who AJPW continued to run after his death. One of the main reasons was the poor condition of all three belts, which over the years had repeatedly been misused as weapons and threatened to break apart. Baba displayed the belts in her home. A title was then created that included motifs from all three belts.
Current title holder
The current AJPW Triple Crown Heavyweight Champion is Suwama in his seventh reign.
