Dale Hey (born June 16, 1945 in Del City , Oklahoma , † November 29, 2012 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American wrestler from Canada. He went by the ring name Buddy Roberts and was one of the founding members of the tag team The Fabulous Freebirds .

biography

Dale Hey grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia. He began wrestling under the name Dale Valentine in 1965 and was introduced as the brother of Johnny Valentine . Around 1970 he changed his name to Buddy Roberts and founded the tag team "Hollywood Blonds" with Jerry Brown. The two won numerous regional titles in the USA.

In the late 1970s he teamed up with Michael Hayes and Terry Gordy to form the tag team "The Fabulous Freebirds". His nickname "Jack" he received because of his fondness for whiskey brand Jack Daniel's .

World Class Championship Wrestling

When the Freebirds switched to World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) in 1982 , they won numerous titles and had a long feud with the Von Erich family . Hey himself mostly feuded against Chris Adams , one of the crowd favorites of the WCCW.

As part of a storyline , Hey made a big appearance in a hair-versus-hair match against Iceman Parsons that resulted in his bald head being shaved. For years he therefore wore a badly fitting wig that was kept out of the box by a head guard . This became one of his trademarks.

At the 1985 SuperClash, Hey helped his tag team partners obtain the AWA tag team titles from the Road Warriors , but the outcome of the match was later canceled.

Universal Wrestling Federation

In 1986 he moved with the Freebirds to the Universal Wrestling Federation , where he received the television title as a single wrestler. He later had to hand it over to Savannah Jack.

Return to World Class Championship Wrestling

In 1987 the Freebirds broke up briefly. Hey and Gordy teamed up with Iceman Parsons and feuded against their former leader Michael Hayes, who had allied with the Von Erichs. In 1988 Hayes and Gordy moved to the Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling .

Retirement and death

Hey appeared in the NWA as manager of Hayes and Jimmy Garvin in a match against Steve Armstrong and Tracy Smothers, but then retired from wrestling and retired in 1990.

During his retirement, Hey developed throat cancer and had to have an operation. Since then he has been dependent on a voice prosthesis . He campaigned against smoking on the WWE.com website . He died on November 29, 2012 at the age of 67.
