Philip Lafond (born September 16, 1961 in Mantouage , Ontario , Canada ) is a Canadian wrestler. He peaked as a tag team partner with Doug Furnas in the 1990s and was particularly successful in Japan. Today he still appears occasionally at independent events. In the course of his career he had several ring names, including Dan Kroffat , Phil Lafleur , Phil or Philip LaFon , Rocky Venturo and Rene Rougeau .

Life

LaFond grew up in Montreal, Quebec. At 19, he left his family and moved to Calgary . There he was discovered in a fitness center by Davey Boy Smith and the Dynamite Kid . The two took him to the famous Hart Dungeon, a basement in Stu Hart's house . There he trained wrestling under the direction of the Japanese Mr. Hito. Like many wrestlers from the Hart stable, he began his career at Stampede Wrestling , the Canadian wrestling promotion led by Stu Hart. After two years he wrestled in the maritime provinces as Rene Rogeau, a name that was later used by René Duprée . From there he went to Japan, where he celebrated his greatest successes.

Together with Doug Furnas and under his ring name Dan Kroffat, he formed the legendary tag team The Can-Am Express. The two won the AJPW All Asia Tag Team Championship five times between 1989 and 1986 . Lafond was also successful as a single wrestler and was allowed to hold the World Junior Heavyweight Championship twice. Both then went to Extreme Championship Wrestling , where they also won the tag team belt.

In 1996 they first appeared in the World Wrestling Federation . They made their debut on the Pay-Per-View Survivor Series . However, the career did not really take off. They had a feud with The British Bulldogs and at the Survivor Series 1998 they were allowed to compete in "Team Canada" together with Bret Hart .

Then there was a fatal car accident in which not only his tag team partner Furnas was seriously injured, but also Lafond. After five months, the two were able to compete again in the WWF, but then switched to the ECW until they were finally dismissed. Both did not manage to continue their careers. Occasionally Lafond still appears in various independent leagues, especially for Monster Pro Wrestling .
