The International Wrestling Association , IWA Puerto Rico for short , was a wrestling association founded in 1999 in Puerto Rico by Victor Quiñones . In 2012 he was dissolved, then the IWA Puerto Rico was active as a wrestling stable in the World Wrestling League. A new beginning has been announced for 2019.

history

prehistory

The history of IWA Puerto Rico began in Japan in 1994 when Victor Quiñones founded IWA Japan . The IWA Puerto Rico was the Spanish language sister organization for Latin America .

First, Victor Quiñones organized events of the World Wrestling Federation in Puerto Rico under the name WWF Latino. The aim was to establish a competition to the fast style of World Championship Wrestlings Cruiserweight Division. Among others, Essa Rios , Super Crazy , Negro Casas , but also established talents such as Savio Vega and Taka Michinoku fought there . The product failed, with the so-called "Spanish Announce Team" of the WWE being retained.

IWA Puerto Rico

Subsequently, Quiñones founded the IWA Puerto Rico together with Miguel Pérez, Jr. and Savio Vega, which was a development territory of the WWF from 1999 and 2001. Well-known main events during these years were Chris Jericho , Kane , Chris Benoit , Goldust and Taka Michinoku. Tiger Ali Singh and Steve Bradley joined the WWF at that time . However, the cooperation between IWA and WWF was short-lived. Many wrestlers complained about the sometimes bad conditions on site.

After the end of the development deal with the wrestling market leader, IWA Puerto Rico posed as direct competition to the World Wrestling Council for father Carlos Colón and his sons Primo and Carlito . Well-known wrestlers at that time were Ricky Banderas (today: Mil Muertes), Apolo and Chicano, as well as today's WWE and TNA stars like Dean Ambrose , Bobby Roode , MVP and Abyss . Events in Puerto Rico reached around 5000 spectators at peak times.

The doctorate remained successful until 2006, but then, at the age of 47, Victor Quiñones suddenly and unexpectedly died of heart failure caused by the consumption of somas with alcohol. From then on, the promotion lost its influence and size, even appearances by well-known indie wrestlers such as Daniel Bryan , Bison Smith and Noah could not prevent the decline. In 2012, the doctorate finally had to close.

As part of the World Wrestling League

In 2012 the World Wrestling League (WWL) was founded in Puerto Rico. In 2014 she managed to sign several former IWA stars, including Savio Vega and Dennos Rivera. This created a wrestling angle in the style of an invasion stryline. In the storyline, Savio Vega (who actually owned the naming rights) tried to rename the WWL to the IWA. The storyline was discontinued relatively quickly in 2015, but came back in 2016 and has been part of WWL ever since.

New beginning 2019

Heavily indebted to the tax office of Puerto Rico, the island has not yet made a comeback of the still well-known brand. The naming rights remained with Miguel Pérez, Jr. and Savio Vega. After a brief interlude with IWA Florida in 2011, this fire was revived in early 2018.

A comeback of the original brand has been announced for 2019.
