D'Hainaut Island ( Spanish Islote D'Hainaut , in the United Kingdom Bombay Island , in Argentina Isla Bombay ) is a small island in the Palmer Archipelago west of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located in Mikkelsen Harbor on Trinity Island .
Participants of the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1908-1910) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot mapped it for the first time. Participants of the 6th Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1951–1952) named them after Lieutenant Ladislao D'Hainaut Fuenzalida of the Chilean Navy , who was involved in this research trip and who later led the 26th Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1971–1972). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names translated the Chilean designation into English in 1965. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee, however, named the bay on September 23, 1960 after the whaler Bombay , who anchored off this island between 1910 and 1917. This name in turn was adopted in Argentina in the Spanish spelling.
