Marquess of Douglas

Marquess of Douglas is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

Award, subordinate and other titles

The title was created on June 14, 1633 for William Douglas, 11th Earl of Angus . Along with the dignity of marquis , he was awarded the subordinate titles Earl of Angus , Lord Abernerthy and Jedburgh Forest . He had inherited the title Earl of Angus , created in the Peerage of Scotland in 1389, from his father in 1611 .

His great-grandson, the 3rd Earl, was also awarded the Duke of Douglas on April 10, 1703 with the subordinate titles Marquess of Angus and Abernethy , Viscount of Jedburgh Forest and Lord Douglas of Bonkill, Prestoun and Robertoun . These titles also belonged to the Peerage of Scotland and already expired with his childless death in 1761. The Marquessate Douglas and the other titles fell to his relative James Douglas-Hamilton, 7th Duke of Hamilton . The titles have since been subordinate titles of the respective Duke of Hamilton .
