Douglas Hamilton, 8th Duke of Hamilton , 5th Duke of Brandon (born July 24, 1756 in Holyrood Palace , † August 2, 1799 in Hamilton Palace ) was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

Douglas was a son of James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton and his wife Elizabeth Campbell, Baroness Hamilton of Hameldon . In 1769 he inherited the title of Duke of Hamilton and Duke of Brandon from his older brother James , as well as the associated subordinate titles. Douglas Hamilton was educated at Eton College . In 1782 he received a seat in the British House of Lords . When his mother died in 1790, he also inherited the title of 2nd Baron Hamilton of Hameldon . From 1794 until 1799 he was Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire . In the British Army he served up to the rank of colonel.

In 1778 he married Elizabeth (1757-1837), daughter of Peter Burrell. The childless marriage was divorced in 1794 and Elizabeth remarried Henry Cecil, 1st Marquess of Exeter . From his connection with Harriet Pye Bennett he had a daughter born out of wedlock: Lady Anne (1796-1844), married in 1820 Henry Robert Westenra, 3rd Baron Rossmore of Monaghan . The title Duke of Hamilton fell on Douglas' death in 1799 to his uncle Archibald , the title Baron Hamilton of Hameldon fell to his half-brother George Campbell , who later became the 6th Duke of Argyll .
