Baron Hamilton of Hameldon in the County of Leicester , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain . The territorial dedication refers to a small place now called Hambledon , located in Rutland .

Award

The title was created for Elizabeth Campbell (nee Gunning) on May 20, 1776 . She was the widow of James Douglas-Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton († 1758) and the second wife of John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll .

On her death, the title fell to her son from her first marriage, Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, 8th Duke of Hamilton , as 2nd Baron. When he died childless in 1799, the title fell to his half-brother, from his mother's second marriage, George Campbell as 3rd baron. In 1806 he inherited the title Duke of Argyll from his father . The Barony of Hamilton of Hameldon has since been a subordinate title of the respective Duke of Argyll.
