Angus Alan Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, 15th Duke of Hamilton (born September 13, 1938 in London , † June 5, 2010 ) was a British peer and politician .

Life

Angus Douglas-Hamilton was the eldest son of Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, 14th Duke of Hamilton from his marriage to Lady Elizabeth Ivy Percy, daughter of Alan Percy, 8th Duke of Northumberland . After his birth, he first carried the courtesy title Earl of Angus , from 1940, when his father became Duke , Marquess of Douglas and Clydesdale . He was educated at Eton College and the University of Oxford . When his father died in 1973 he inherited his title of nobility as the 15th Duke of Hamilton and was a member of the British House of Lords until the House of Lords Act 1999 came into force . Due to the age of his title, created in 1643 for his ancestor James Hamilton , he was considered Prime Duke of Scotland in the protocol order of precedence .

Douglas-Hamilton served in the Royal Air Force and worked as a test pilot in the early 1970s. Through the subordinate title of Lord Abernethy , he held the hereditary office of bearer of the Scottish crown , which he held at every opening of the Scottish Parliament, founded in 1999 . He was also a member of the Royal Company of Archers , the ceremonial bodyguard of the British monarch for Scotland. He was active in animal welfare with his wife.

The Duke was one of the five people in the United Kingdom who have two Duketitel at the same time, namely in addition to the Scottish title 15th Duke of Hamilton and the British title 12th Duke of Brandon , which was awarded to the 4th Duke of Hamilton in 1711 .
