Ormonde Castle

Ormonde Castle ( Irish Caisleán Urmhumhan ) is both the ruins of a lowland castle and a mansion on the River Suir in the east of Carrick-on-Suir in Ireland's County Tipperary . The oldest part of today's castle ruins is the enclosure wall from the middle of the 15th century, which is provided with towers on the northeast and northwest corners.

History of the castle

The original Ormonde Castle was built before 1315 and was acquired by the Butler family that same year . James Butler was later promoted to 1st Earl of Ormonde .

History of the manor

Manor Ormonde Castle

Sometime after 1565 Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormonde , (sometimes also referred to as 3rd Earl of Ormonde) spent many years at the court of his cousin Elisabeth I , to whom he was related through Anne Boleyn . There he got an impression of Elizabethan architecture and brought these impressions to Ireland, where he had a manor house built in this style next to his castle, the first of its kind in Ireland.

In the 17th century the house was the preferred residence of James Butler , the "Great Duke of Ormonde", but the Butler family gave up the house as a residence after James' death in 1688. But it remained in the hands of the family until the middle of the 20th century. In 1947 she left Ormonde Castle to the state authorities, who had the historic structures restored.

The mansion was improved by installing coupled windows in the front facade of both floors and bay windows in the vestibule in the middle of this facade. The first floor gallery has two carved mantels and a ceiling and frieze in Elizabethan stucco . The U-shape of the mansion includes a small courtyard that adjoins the north side of the enclosure of the old castle. The mansion has two full floors and an attic with gables.

The greatest success of the restoration was the gallery on the upper floor, the ceiling of which had largely collapsed. This room, which was once a place to hang pictures , has a magnificent limestone open fireplace that bears the date 1565 and a stucco relief of Elizabeth I, flanked by allegories of equality and justice . It is said that she promised her cousin that she would visit one day.
