The light stem-head fly ( Physocephala vittata ) is a species from the family of bladder-head flies (Conopidae).

features

The flies reach body lengths between 9 and 16 millimeters. Her face is yellow, with no black stripes and no black area above the base of the antennae . The rear area of ​​the frons is brownish in color. The black antennae are colored reddish near their tips. The proboscis (proboscis) is completely black in color. The black thorax has yellow-red shoulder bumps. The petiolus (abdomen stalk) has a broad red band. The adjoining tergites have a basal black part and a golden yellow apical part. The femora are colored red-yellow. The tibiae are predominantly colored yellow. The wings are dark in color in the front area. The dark coloring does not extend to the wing tips. The anterior marginal cell is whitish.

Physocephala vittata occurs in the western Palearctic as well as in the northeastern Afrotropic . The species is widespread in Central and Southern Europe. It is absent in the British Isles .

Way of life

The flight time lasts from June to September. The flies are mostly observed at the edges of the forest and on the roads. The flies visit the flowers of various thistles and umbelliferae like mountain hairline .

The larvae of Physocephala vittata are solitary coinobionte endoparasitoids from different bumblebees .
