Lochmaben , Scottish Gaelic Loch Mhabain , is a village in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . It is located around five kilometers west of Lockerbie and twelve kilometers northeast of Dumfries in Annandale , one of the three regions of the traditional county of Dumfriesshire . The Annan runs about one kilometer to the west. Lochmaben is surrounded by three lakes, Castle Loch in the south, Kirk Loch in the west and Mill Loch in the north.

history

On the southern edge of the village is a moth on which the early medieval Lochmaben Old Castle was once located. As the clan seat of Clan Bruce , King Robert the Bruce may have been born there. With the construction of Lochmaben Castle on the south bank of Castle Loch in the middle of the 14th century, defense construction became obsolete. After Lochmaben Castle was raised to a royal castle under Jacob II and expanded under Jacob IV , it became of strategic importance. The castle in the Scottish-English border area was attacked several times and after its conquest by James VI. Finally abandoned in 1588.

Lochmaben was founded in 1296 and received the status of a Royal Burgh in 1440 . Different clans ruled the lands over the centuries . The Bruce 'were followed by the Earls of Moray and finally the Earls of Douglas . The mansions in the area include the Tower House Elshieshields Tower and the now demolished Halleaths mansion , of which the Halleaths Home Farm still testifies today .

The Church of St Mary Magdalene has been a church building on the site since the 12th century . However, this was given up in favor of the newly built Lochmaben Parish Church in the 1820s. The Tolbooth in the town center still comes from its status as a Burgh . Lochmaben developed as a local center of the textile and dairy industry. In the 1880s there was a relatively large school in Lochmaben with a capacity of 425 students. The village is still the site of a primary school today. In 1905, a hospital that is still in operation today was opened as a regional hospital for infectious diseases.

Lochmaben already had a four-digit population in the 19th century. After increasing to 2024 by 1991, it has declined slightly. As part of the 2011 census survey, 1942 people were counted in Lochmaben.

traffic

The A709 (Lockerbie – Dumfries) forms the main thoroughfare of Lochmaben and connects the village to the trunk road network. In the east the A74 (M) ( Carlisle - Glasgow ), in the west the A75 ( Stranraer - Gretna Green ) and the A701 ( Edinburgh - Dumfries) can be reached within a short time via the A709 .

In the middle of the 19th century, the village received its own train station along a branch line of the Caledonian Railway . However, this has since been given up with the route.
