Elshieshields Tower , also Elshieshield Tower or Elchieshields Tower , is a tower house near the Scottish town of Templand in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 1988.

history

Presumably a defensive tower was built at the site in the 1420s. Parts of this previous structure were probably integrated into the construction of Elshieshields Tower, which was dated around 1567. In the course of the 18th century a residential building was added on the west side, which was expanded in the following two centuries.

description

Elshieshields Tower is isolated on the right bank of the Water of Ae around 1.5 km west of Templand. The three-story defense tower has an L-shaped floor plan. The stair tower, which forms the short side of the L, is two stories higher. The final gable roof is designed with a stepped gable . At the foot is the entrance portal, which leads to the inner spiral staircase. Above the third floor, a stair tower protrudes from the inside corner of the building , which, like the three corner tiers at the edges of the building, ends with a conical roof . The facades are plastered with Harl .

The directly adjoining residential building was originally two-story, but was extended in the late 19th century. The south facade is five axes wide and designed with dormer windows. Illuminations flank the protruding entrance portal. A stair tower emerges at the rear. To the left of this is a portal with a Tudor arch from the 19th century. While the facades of the residential building are plastered, the exposed brickwork of the flatter extension is made of red sandstone .
